In the modern world, it's laughable and narcisistic at best-- and at worst, bestial and disgusting.

@geecee Well, I know a lot of men that wish they could lick their own balls LOL.

On a serious note, eating the placenta is a very important custom in other cultures, but I do not see what could be gained by doing it here. I have had 3 children, and I never even wanted to SEE the placenta, much less eat it. There are other ways to get the nutrients and vitamins that are claimed to be gotten from eating the placenta. And as far as comparing us to animals, just stop. We are NOT animals, and I am very glad of it!

You can bet Einstein's mother didn't eat her own placenta! The old comparison of humans to animals is sooooo stupid. My dog also goes around sniffing asses and crap on the ground, and licks his ball all the time. By their logic men could go up to stray woman and sniff their crotches. It is just STUPID, STUPID, STUPID!!!

I tend to think this is more something certain women would do to get attention or feel trendy or get a rush than it is a way to get anything beneficial. Animals eat the placenta so that the nutrients aren't wasted and so predators aren't attracted by it. Unless you are flat out starving or being tracked by wolves as you give birth I can't see any benefit to it. Any possible benefit women feel they might get from the placenta could be gotten in other ways, but that's not quite the conversation stopper.

We do whatever is socially acceptable at the time. Our aversion to eating the Placenta is like the aversion westerners would have to eating cockroaches. Whereas it would be a perfectly delicious snack in another culture. I'm certain it would have very strengthening effects on a postpartum mother. Considering my own experience of extreme weakness and falling terribly sick after delivery I could see it's benefits.

In nature, animals need to be resourceful in order to survive. Unlike us, they don't have access to vitamin pills. They eat whatever is available. Some will go as far as licking rocks to gain minerals... so the placenta seems to be a perfectly reasonable meal. Actually, most animals eat them because they don't want to leave traces of the recent birth behind them, which would attract predators.
Well, I don't think we're there anymore and eating our placenta is not only ridiculous and unnecessary, it's just another crazy fad to make us feel we aren't doing absolutly everything for our children. The thought of taking a chunk of raw meat (let alone placenta) and blend it with coconut milk and banana just made me gag. I don't think I would even take the placenta pills to be honest, it just sounds like another scam.

What is the world coming to? Eating yourself, although they claim it to be healthy is a scary thing to imagine. The very first thing that came to my mind was cannibalism. before we know it they will be labeling these women insane an taking them away from their children. Gross

PS There are other ways of getting iron and b-12; Please people do not eat yourself

OMG!! WHEN I SAW THIS LINK I WAS UTTERLY CONFUSED AS TO WHAT CHILD BIRTH HAS COME TOO. "NOT IN A PILL, NOT ON A HILL, NOT IN A DRINK, NOT OVER A SINK, NOT BOILED, NOT FRIED, NOT BAKED, OR SAUTEED, SAID THE CAT IN THE HAT". I DEFINATELY DONT THINK THIS IS HEALTHY. DOES'T THE BABYS WAST GO THROUGH THIS AS WELL?

This is the most disgusting thing I've ever heard of! Last time I checked we were in 2011 and not in the Middle Age! I can imagine that a new mom will have big hopes about this helping her or her baby's health, but why do it since there is NO study proving it actually works ? It puzzles me to see how vulnerable we can be to superstition!
Some animals may be eating their placenta, just as some also eat their cubs! Should we try that too? That's why we are humans, and not animals!

Now what radical idoit thought this up, I guess now days nothing should suprise me but still yet here is another. How about making the pills and whoever it was that thought of this eats them, what a healthy person that would be....Give me a break

I agree with Josie. Isn't that cannabalism? Just because it's you and not another human being makes no difference. That is a disgusting, vile thing to do. Also I gree with Donna, Heck no!

  • leah - 13 years ago

I have to agree with Donna...HELL TO THE NO!!!!! That literally made me sick to think about people doing that. Sick and wrong... ugh.

  • Corinne - 13 years ago

OMG ewwww. NO NO NO!!!! My daughter is just fine at 5 years old, and I did not eat my placenta. So I would not do it for future children.

  • Giuliana - 13 years ago

YUCK-O! I can understand the concept, but c'mon! That is soooo not kosher! However, the pill idea, wasn't so bad. If I can swallow my iron pills, I think I could definitly take placenta pills. Otherwise, bite the placenta! No pun intended :)

  • Donna Austin - 13 years ago

Not no, but HELL NO. My baby is healthy enough, thank you, without me eating myself.

  • Josie - 13 years ago

    Isn't this cannibalism?

  • Jessyka - 13 years ago

There is no way I would eat that....I would take it in pill form though. It would be much easier to take a pill then try to get that down, just knowing what it is and yeah nope not for me. I have a hard time eating deer and other wild animals like that so yeah I wouldnt be able to just cook it and eat it but the pill form, why not???

  • Tara - 13 years ago

Ok this sounds really gross! However, us mothers say we would do anything for our children even die for them. So why wouldn't we take a pill that's made out of our placenta? I couldn't eat it, but a pill .....ugh! Whatever I could do to make my baby be so very healthy.
