The ability to create fire came with the invention of matches not lighters!!!
Lighters merely gave us another way of doing something we had been able to do quite happily for years with matches... and as such is possibly less important than any of the other options

To many apple things in this list. TV gets my vote. If spam filter was a gadget..then it would also get my vote :)

I can't help but wonder if this survey is about the "MOST POPULAR" Gadget or truly the GREATEST - there is a subtle difference. Not on the list and perhaps not a gadget per se, but if it had been there I would have voted for the humble transistor without which many of today's electronic devices -telephone, television, laptop, Apple IPad and countless others simply would not exist.
Alas the transistor does not feature, surely then the greatest gadget has to be the watch.

Yes the ability to make fire came after the telephone? Without fire and the means to make it where and when we choose nothing we do is possible.
