Can see option 1 has some plus points bearing in mind Stephen's point about rubbish, also ease of maintenance, uses less material (cheaper?), wider circumference? (accommodates expansion of trunk for longer). But the general structure makes me think of a zimmer frame! Would the open structure tempt people to chain bikes to it? (Easy enough to tie dogs to either!) So in the end, I go for option 2 if we need to have tree guardl.

Option 2 looks much better and gives the tree more protection, however it will be more difficult to clean out after it has been used as a waste bin.
