I totally agree with you that the BCS is an outdated system that will never truly declare a true national champion. However, the bowl games themselves are too powerful and tied into too many conferences that they cannot be eliminated. With today's "student athletes" it would be asking too much of them to play an extra four games until the end of January to declare the champion. The only way for this to work is to take the 4 BCS bowl games: Rose, Sugar, Orange, and Fiesta and use them as the 4 playoff sites for the 16 team system. The national championship game would continue to rotate.
