So what happens now? its evident that Chin has won...

  • Zara - 12 years ago

All these teachers seem so wonderful, I'm sad to say I haven't had the personal experience of being taught by any of them. I love Chemistry as a whole, though :D I've heard lots of good things about Mr. Chin from my friends, and from the people on this comment board. And although no-one I've met has really talked about Mr. Foulston being their teacher, I can see he must be extraordinary from all these positive comments. Mr. Delahaye, Mr. Dawkins and Ms. Piggot haven't been mentioned as often, so I'd love to see more comments describing their efforts, if possible. And the efforts of all those great unsung Chem teachers, like Miss Marshall! I've only had you for a few weeks, but your diligence and no-nonsense attitude have really inspired me to work my hardest in Chemistry (now I only have to find a bit more inspiration for my other subjects...) All I can say is, let the best man or woman win! I'll vote for Mr. Chin, not because I know him personally, but because he's helped to shape the lives of so many of my closest friends, and I am almost as grateful for that as they are!

  • Sasha Lee - 12 years ago

:) I guess we are all very very very passionate about our teachers, because we all know what its like to not understand something and then this person came into our class room and made it all ok, difficult concepts are now in our reach and we feel empowered by that experience and that's a very, very strong feeling for any student, one that we will never forget. and i suppose that we are all trying to make each other understand what that experience was like for each of us, because for some of us chemistry had its moments that would have drove any one us over the edge, but thank God for the miracle of our chemistry teachers, who made it all go away!

I had that experience with Mr. Foulston, and others had that experience with their teacher as well, and the fact that we are here writing some pretty strongly worded comments :) means that experience meant alot to us! and we can't and shouldn't want to take that away from each other, for it seems that all our teachers achieved the most important thing, they made us love chemistry and we in turn Love and appreciate them very much for that.

So lets drink to Mr. Michael Foulston for Titchfield High and to all the other wonderful teachers that helped make the world of chemistry a lot less complicated!

  • mF - 12 years ago

This is terrible wasn't this supposed to be where we simply supported our teachers, so what if someone thinks that their teacher is the best and spent his or her own money? Don't you think that your teacher is the best for some other reason? No other teacher's name was mentioned so why are we being so hostile?

  • T - 12 years ago

No Mr. Foulston was not given a cheque for providing those extra lessons, it was something that he did of his own initiative, he was not a paid member of staff.

  • cmPionite - 12 years ago

kippy mi seh!Best chem teacher,self-less and he does as much as he can to help out his students yu can go to him even wen he is on his lunch brk.MR.CHIN ADDI BEST AND MI DONE TLK

  • Nicky - 13 years ago

Fellow confused Campionite I will take back what I said as I like to use facts. Kippy most of been a great teacher as well. I think what Sasha lee didn't get across was that Mr. Foulston spent quick a bit of his own money on his students in various ways which there is no need to get into. Writing you own notes has it power but Mr. Foulston's idea was if he gave you the notes you could spend more time listening instead of writing. It's true this competition should be a friendly one and only about what each Teacher did to mold all of us into great chemistry students. My vote is of course for Mike Foulston. Thank you all for voting.

  • Confused Campionite - 13 years ago

I'm so confused about Nicy's statement. Mr. Chin's students took Chemistry at UWI because they were successful at it and therefore were able to do the subject at a tertiary level. Sweety you don't do a subject at University if you fail it in high school. Were you trying to make the implication that Mr. Chin's students had to repeat Chemistry? If so please clarify, just so I can quote you the excellent pass rate that we as Campionite students enjoy. Stick to your area of expertise honey. If you had even read prior posts you would have seen how many of Mr. Foulston's students spoke of him equipping them for Chemistry at UWI. This competition is not about trying to bash the other teachers in the competition. It was started as a means to allow those of us who are grateful to our beloved chemistry teachers to give them the honour they deserve. Mr. Foulston seems to have been an amazing teacher so I can't say anything negative about him.
For me, Mr. Chin was the best Chemistry teacher. He was selfless and hardworking. I and many other students (not only Campionites as he taught extra lessons to others) were successful at CXC and A'level Chemistry because of the excellent teaching we received at the hands of the man I will unashamedly call the MASTER of Chemistry.

Many of his students have gone on to pursue careers in Chemistry (and Nicy to achieve that, you have to do Chemistry at UWI).
But anyways Kippy receives my vote.

And as for you Madam Sasha Lee, unless you didn't pay tuition at Titchfield, Mr. Foulston received "financial gain" from teaching you. Its called a pay cheque!
Do not attempt to sully the name of someone you do not know and did not have the privilege to be taught by. I never once had to pay anything extra (of course I paid a school fee, come on, only healthcare is really free and we see what that has led to) for Mr. Chin's wonderful teaching. And for those who CHOSE to pay for extra lessons with him, I am sure the teaching they received was worth EVERY CENT!

And personally I loved writing my own notes, more power to Mr. Foulston for the handouts but that wasn't necessary for me to obtain my distinctions in CXC and Alevel Chemistry.

  • Nicy - 13 years ago

I just want to ask one question, how many of Mr. Chin's Students had to take Chemistry at Utech and UWI? If you check the stats a large number of Mr. Foulston student's didn't have to take Chemistry after high school. Just saying!!!

  • Kippy-ite - 13 years ago

Once again, it seems only respectful that persons do not make any presumptuous statements about Mr. Kesang Chin or any other Chemistry teacher for that matter. The mere fact that Mr Chin had students at his home any day of the week at any time, simply illustrates his selflessness. I went to the school that he taught at so it would be ridiculous for me to speak of not paying for tuition. Nonetheless, other persons who did not attend the school at which he taught, have declared his selflessness and dedication to making others understand, accept and enjoy Chemistry. This makes it OBVIOUS that he was in no way motivated by financial gain. Mr. Chin to the best of my knowledge is Jamaican and so he did not have to leave anywhere to go somewhere else to educate. This shows that Jamaicans can be true stars when they apply themselves (for the right reasons). Mr. Chin's green chemistry approach, that is no printed notes etc also worked! Yes it did! The duster and chalk did all his work along with his fun and unique ways of relating the material to his students. No printed notes, yet EVERY SINGLE ONE of his students EXCELLED.
It is sad when others cannot appreciate the greatness of others due to being so 'one track minded'. Mr. Foulston is definitely the greatest to all Titchfielders, however, Mr. Kesang 'Kippy' Chin is the greatest to Campionites, students from Georges, Calabar, Immaculate, St. Andrew High for Girls, Ardenne, Meadowbrook and the list goes on. Frankly I believe they are both excellent and formidable 'opponents' but without a shadow of doubt in my mind, MR. CHIN IS AND ALWAYS BE THE ABSOLUTE BEST HIGH SCHOOL CHEMISTRY TEACHER EVER AND MANY OF US LOVED OUR LITTLE 'SPHERE'. WICKED BIAS ... I'll leave that alone...
P.S. People should learn to give credit when and where it is obviously due and not be judgemental. After all, many people may think their mother's cooking is the best ....

This started out so mildly and spirited with good clean fun ...

  • Sasha Lee - 13 years ago

It is a fact of our existence and indeed the story of humanity, that it is those who are least deserving of an honor are those most likely to be its recipient, simply because, the majority have been placed in the unfortunate position of having little knowledge or experience of what lies beyond their immediate sphere and the wicked bias which governs our dispositions, that is to act only because it tells us that we are better than others, but in the grand scheme of things we have failed in our responsibility to honor what is true and good.

I challenge anyone who has been taught by any other legend other then Mr Michael Foulston, to state of a fact that:
    1. their teacher has not been motivated by financial gain and that they have been taught for free without cost to them
    2. left a first world foreign country solely to educate students in a developing country, published his own notes without the assistance of the school or students and supplied them to all students.

It is indeed true things that are good and virtuous are shunned by the world, NO OTHER TEACHER IN THIS COUNTRY HAS THAT LEVEL OF COMMITMENT NONE!

    It is a shame

  • Colleen - 13 years ago

I really dont know what my life would be like without Mr Foulston. He made Chemistry exciting and understandable. Some of my favorite moments in high school happened in his classes. I can say without any exaggeration, that he is one of the kindest, sweetest, dedicated, most supportive and most understanding teachers/mentor I have ever had. He is a brilliant chemist, yet he remains extremely humble. Words cant express my gratitude to Mr Fully. I pray that he gets enough support to win this award for he more than deserves it. He sincerely believes in people and their potential, and that is a rare quality to find in most people today. God bless Mr Fully and may his life be filled with many new blessings

  • Whitney - 13 years ago

If it wasnt for Mr. Foulston im sure I would not have passed Chemistry. Thank God for Mr Foulston, he deserves this.

  • Simone - 13 years ago

    Hey everyone:

It is clear the passion that you feel for your teachers - teachers that you have deemed as extraordinary. A few of you have expressed the sentiments that inspired you to vote for your teacher of choice. There seems to be a wide gap between the number of votes and the number of sentiments expressed on this blog and in the facebook group. So, we are giving you permission to express yourself beyond the poll!

As of today, we are introducing a new element to this feature. You are asked to write (if you have not yet done so) about what makes your teacher of choice so exemplary. All the positive sentiments will be collated, put into a journal and delivered to the teachers and the schools.

I think it will be a beautiful memento to them.

(Don't forget to indicate if you wish to be made anonymous in the journal.)

    Spread the word!!

  • Ricky - 13 years ago

Kippy was the best Chemistry teacher. He managed to get me to pass chemistry in about 4 classes, and up to beginning of 5th form I did not even know the first 20 elements in the periodic table. Plus he was a cool dude who always had time for all students, whether in his class or not, whether you were ann A student or really idling like myself. Its thanks to teacers like him who made studying cool that I am a nerd today. (I wonder if that was a good thing after all......hmmm)

  • kera bryan - 13 years ago

Mr. Kippy Chin IS THE BEST CHEMISTRY TEACHER ALIVE IN KINGSTON, IN JAMAICA, IN THE CARIBBEAN AND THE WORLD!!!

NO OTHER THAN SIR KIPPY CHIN
    THE CHEMISTRY GOD!!!

When does this voting end? Mr. Foulston is no doubt the best chemistry teacher.

  • vigilant1 - 13 years ago

Michael Foulston's the best, hands down. There's no questioning that. Best!

  • Sanique - 13 years ago

After reading these comments it appears that each of these teachers touched the life of quite a few, Mr. Foulston however, has taught generations.....my mother, my older brother, myself and now younger members of my family......i have never seen such dedication as shown by him from any other member of the human race. It is my desire that he receives this award so he will be somehow thanked properly for his continuing dedication to the knowledge of students in eastern JA. I have nothing but fond memories of his zeal for teaching and the excitement he brought to each class that was so infectious that u couldn't help but want to learn, and may i say also that his well of patience in my experience has been deep and never ending as well. I'm sure the other teachers are good but Mr. Fully inspired greatness.

On a January afternoon if u go out to Foreshore Road u may feel the cool Portland breeze as well as u may feel the salty mist from the ocean, even take the smell of the sea as it ebbs and flows but u will also see a man in a pair of shorts, with a bag of papers in his hand and a smile on his face. "Are we ready?"-M.Foulston

I was never a student of Mr. Kippy Chin officially. Never went to his extras or was a member of his class in school. However I am extremely grateful. I was a struggling chem student his wife directed me to him and that was the best chemistry lesson I ever had. Many students in my year were having problems with chemistry he took time out of his Saturday told any one who needed help to come starting early in the morning and not ending until afternoon, not one student was asked to contribute not even a dollar. Often you'll see him walking just stop him and ask him a question and he'll answer any question you have and in a split second ask him about math or physics and he'll answer. He has a very warm and approachable spirit. When I would ask him thing after explaining he would say " Mek sure you understand and come back if you need help'. I have never paid a dime to Mr. Chin. Seeing him on a campus was always a fun time

  • Pammy - 13 years ago

Kippy's teaching method is VERY unique. It was impossible to become bored in his class as the ways he coveyed various topics were amusing, interesting and most importantly, the lessons stuck in our heads. He covered a wide cross section of the island and persons can testify to the fact that many who lived in the rural areas made the effort to come to Kingston to attend his classes, as he was simply THAT GREAT! His fatherly and approachable manner welcomed any and every one and many persons, Campionite and otherwise, can attest to the fact that he and his wife opened their home to students who could drop in at anytime when they had dicfficulty with a particular concept or simply wanted to go through practice questions. Mr. Chin is not only a Chemistry wiz, but is also great at Physics, Pure, Applied and Additional Mathematics. Also a star baller! His jolly countenance was also quite welcoming and nothing seemed to bother him AT ALL. He has everything all up there, as all he would come to class with is a piece of chalk and a duster. He and his wife also got to work very early in the mornings and would be amongst the last set of teachers to leave. Mr. Chin, in my opinion is the perfect mixture of a humble, dedicated, engaging, blessed, creative, fun-loving, kind-hearted genius and educator. Regardless of the outcome, he will always be the best high school chemistry teacher I have ever had.

  • Simone - 13 years ago

From the facebook group comments the students supporting the top two contenders seem to share this sentiment expressed by Ainka Brown

...in every class [the teacher] made chemistry come alive and seem so easy and relevant.

I hope we continue to have teachers like these, in abundance, in our schools. There is so much talk now about 'failing schools' in Jamaica.

I'm a little late to this argument, and I'm not discounting Mr Foulston's accomplishments. However I was one of Kippi's extra lessons students. I went to Immaculate and was told I was not "good enough" to do chemistry. So I changed to St. Andrew High and was given the opportunity to do all the sciences that I was not good enough for. I still needed a little help, and so with the help of Kippi, I was able to get a clear foundation. Mr. Reid, also at Campion helped for CXCs and Kippi for the A-levels. My personal experience with Kippi went even beyond High School. He used to stop by my home, (on a Saturday night - none the less), sit in the dining room and go through my univeristy tutorial questions, so that I could get through at UWI too. He didn't charge a penny! I owe him a lot of gratitude. With his help, I also graduated with an M. Phil. in Chemistry from UWI. Not only did he give me the fundamentals, he gave me the confidence to know that I was "good enough"!

...none of Kippy's student were in his extras class....the classes after school were a sea of Wolmers, Calabar, Ardenne, St. Andrew High, J.C., K.C., Holy Childhood, Immaculate, St. Jago, St. Catherine High, Merl Grove, Queens...etc. and it wasn't just Chemistry. There was Mathematics and Physics and lessons in life......that my darling is ENOUGH SAID.

Now listen here Kamau Francis etal....Michael Foulston, is a legend, just ask all the students from Portland, St. Mary, St. Thomas and St. Ann who wanted to be taught by the best and the brightest. His extra classes were freeeeee....and really werent required because we absorbed all we needed to in class. Will you find Mr. Kippy in Campions chemistry lab every evening after school preparing for the next school day? would you find him in the lab on a saturday and sunday evening? Did Kippy roll off his notes for his students, using his own money to pay for paper? Chemistry was Mr. Fully's LIFE...at his home, his walls are covered with pictures of his students, (It was after he retired I knew that the wall was originally painted white)...Mr. Fully did this because he loved chemistry and loved even more to teach his students......On the note of retirement....guess what......he still comes to Jamaica every year to teach studenst for freeeeeeeee.....lets me realistic, while I will not comment on the process of Mr. Chin, one needs to recognise that he was highly financially motivated in all he does....Mr. Foulston geniunely LOVES to teach hence he does it for free. Titchfiled has tried for years to honour him and he flatly refuses to attend any such event...NOW....if that is not humility, tell me what is.....The fact that I am also a proud pass student of his speaks volumes of this man's influence to producing GREATNESS!!!!!!!!! (I will now take a bow)..lolol

I, for one, do NOT believe that simply clicking a button will ever truly represent the most outstanding individual with qualities that make a Chemistry Teacher great. Of course, the Mr. Chin you speak of has popularity in the corporate area and has definitely made significant contribution to the success of Chemistry at the high school level. HOWEVER!!!...Mr. MICHAEL FOULSTON of The Titchfield School FULLY epitomizes the greatness, humility and passion that I believe transcends ALL norms of any other Chemistry teacher, or ANY high school teacher, period. Mr. Foulston's dedication to Chemistry and to teaching amazes everyone. Why he does what he does is beyond me but he continues to do it LONG past his retirement. He walks several MILES from his home in eastern Portland to Port Antonio every day to conduct his FREE classes. The students do not pay, neither does the school or the MOE subsidize him. He teaches with a passion that grabs you, pulls you in and allows you to forever respect and honor the concepts of chemical theory. While he is not necessarily popular amongst the Kingstonians, he is the greatest philanthropic educator I and many others have EVER come across, even after attending a world renowned tertiary institution with nobel prize nominees. I speak not to undermine the good that others have done, but to highlight the GREAT and continued impact that Mr. Foulston has had on each individual that has passed through his hands. THIS, I believe, is the greater good: teaching to continue the appreciation for Chemistry as a physical science rather than merely teaching to allow a pack of prideful students to attain good grades in some exam. He is dedicated to the former, which, inevitably results in the latter. He does this with humility, refusing to accept any award or formal recognition, unless you trick him into it via a surprise. Mr Foulston teaches from his heart, and I cannot help but only ATTEMPT to speak from mine. A click of a button, portraying corporate popularity will not represent the likes of the greatest Chemistry teacher in Jamaica; but I will click the button because there is none other that is more deserving!

PLEASE, click that button to support a noble, humble, virtuous, kind, genuine and PASSIONATE human being and educator in the discipline of Chemistry...Mr. MICHAEL FOULSTON!

  • Patricia - 13 years ago

Mr Foulston was definitely a superb teacher. Personally I absolutely loved all the sciences and math immensely. Choosing Chemistry over the other subjects was no doubt due to Mr. Foulston's awesome way of fully engaging his students with great experiments. He was truly dedicated and wrote and copied his own notes for each and every student. I never had to buy a Chemistry book back then. I have also been able to experience many other Chemistry teachers seeing as I currently hold a Ph.D. in Chemistry. Although some have been great none compared to Mr. Foulston in terms of his enthusiasm for the subject and for teaching it.

  • Basil - 13 years ago

Mr. Foulston is an unparalleled chemistry teacher. He gets the most disinterested student to appreciate and love chemistry. He is the reason I am currently pursuing a PhD in Chemistry. In all my years of taking chemistry in undergrad and now in grad school, I have yet to come across another professor who is as talented at facilitating learning and engaging his/her students as Mr. Foulston did and is still doing.

Mr. Foulston is simply unchallenged and deserved all respect for his contribution to and impact on young minds.

  • james - 13 years ago

look, there is ABSOLUTELY NO OTHER like Mr.Foulston. this man is the greatest chem teacher in jamaica. said with no apology. the others count your blessings with the few votes you got. I agree with Sean, we only have experience with one teacher, so will vote for the one we know. the true winner are all the students like us, whom i presume are all succesful becaused of dedicated teachers like the one in this poll and many more who guide us to success, allot of time with limited resources. Forget the poll, look after your past teachers, dont forget them, help them, the teachers pension in Ja and the Caribbean is poor.
    Robin

  • Sean - 13 years ago

How does one judge the best chem teacher when most people have the experience of just one. Maybe it would have been better if there were testimonials or some sort of description before inviting people to vote.

  • Cynthia (nora) - 13 years ago

Mr. Foulston from Titchfield you are the best chemistry teacher ever. I remember that old press you had to make all our notes for classes, the large jars of chemicals, excellent titration techniques. No one fail your class.
