Citing public safety, MPD wants to encrypt its radios so the public can’t monitor its communications. Should the public be allowed to monitor police scanners?

The tax payers support the police departments, pay for the equipment, pay salaries, supply vehicles and so on. They should be allowed to listen in to see what their tax dollars are doing and how the police are handling situations on a daily basis. I think the local law enforcement agencies would be hard pressed to show many or any situations where scanners interfered with them doing their job. Just another expense for the tax payer to obsorb. Encryption isn't cheap.
