There was no apparent disrespect on behalf of the student, after all it was half time. I
leadership training for the insenstive principle.

Here is a question I don't think anyone has brought up in any of the discussions.

The letter to Bryan's mother was dated 19 Sep, but stated the suspension was effective the 13th (the previous week) and will end the 26th, which would be a total of 10 days.

    How can:

    1. A letter of suspension be retro-active
    or
    2. that big of an error in dates be made

It seems to me that after the football game incident, the school warden tried to just lump everything together and get him tossed out.

I'm really glad my kids won't go to Forge, and if I ever hear of Dr. Karen C. Spillman being in charge of one of the school they attend, they will be dropped immediately.

Now that Banana Man is free, let's SUSPEND STILLMAN. Anyone want to wear a Yellow T-Shirt with THAT on it?

@Michelle was mountain view but no he had maybe a week if that.

glad someone finally came to the right mind and now its only 5 days! even then thats harsh too.

Basically, this is a knee-jerk reaction to a harmless non-event. The students are doing nothing wrong, and if I can get a yellow T-shirt made fast enough, I'll show up at their game tonight with the words:

    "Free Banana Man
    Suspend Spillman"

As an adult and not having any kids at Colonial Forge, there's not much they can do except prevent me from entering the game. I would be very interested to see how many kids show up to tonight's game wearing yellow t-shirts.

As much as I think the ACLU should not get involved in some matters, I hope they plan to have a representative at the game.

I remember not to long ago the streaker that ran across the football field at what was it North Stafford? Was he suspended for the whole year? I do not think so. Kids will be kids. You have to say when we were their agre we would of thought it was great that someone had the nerve to do it. No one was hurt. Worry about the trouble makers that start the fights because their team did not win the game. What is our world coming to.

I understand "Banana Man" was suspended several times last year, and has already been suspended once this year. The schools haven't been in session that long. I also know it was NOT spur of the moment, he acquired the custume prior to the incident, and had informed lots of students of his intentions last Friday night. The kids were even talking about it last week during practice. So this was planned way in advance. Yes I agree cutting across the football field should only require a few days suspension. The profantity and disrespect while being chased and caught, deserves a bit more. But don't be fooled that this has anything to do with his abilities, and has noting to do with him trying to gain publicity for himself and for his DJ gig he does on the side.

    Lisa,

I did an internet search and learned that Dr. Spillman had a reporter arrested after she learned that the story wasn't going to be portrayed in a manner she preferred. Check out this article:

    http://www2.insidenova.com/news/2011/sep/22/3/principal-bananana-man-uproar-once-worked-woodbrid-ar-1329415/

I checked several other sources and verified this information. In addition, the reporter herself spoke up in the comments in the previous article.

Really Dan? I am extremely curious as to what that is exactly..... Feel free to email me... LenaDaLlama@yahoo.com, please please please

  • Dan - 13 years ago

Dr. Spillman has a history of idiotic punishments and enforement of rules. She did something worse in Prince William County in 2001.

I agree, free Bannana Man and suspend the good doctor (who by the way won't respond to any comments either through the school e-mail or on the news sites).

Just bar him from attending a couple games.

it is going to effect this student for the rest of his life, over some administrator making a mountain out of an ant hill!! No charges are coming from the Sheriffs department. Plus he never made contact with anyone and surrendered quickly. I just can't believe while reading this article my thoughts about Colonial Forge High School. Too bad for these students Lord forbid someone sneezes on the principal they might face battery charges. 3 day suspension at most.

  • Hopie - 13 years ago

Very well said Lena. all the "hipe " is just a bit much if they had let the kids be kids it would not have got this out of hand. And to drag all into this drama is just way to much to digest. Dr.Bridges please make this stop so our kids can be the young adults I know they can be.

  • Lena - 13 years ago

Seems like if the Sheriff's Office couldn't figure out any charges that evening, then there wasn't any reason. Now, it's so out of control and the administrators are not willing to back down. They are also dragging the bus drivers into the drama. Give the kid 1-3 days suspension and then leave it alone! Stop backing the kids into corners! Oh, and Saturday school? Really? So, now we taxpayers are being punished as well. GROW UP Forge administrators

I agress Stafford schools have become ridiculous...he didn't hurt anyone, had no weapons or drugs...and was fully clothed. He ran at half time when no one was on the field and only ran down the side lines. What's the big deal for a little laugh? I think some of the administrator's have forgotten what it's like to be a child. I can see a day or 2 suspension but get over yourselves 10 days and expelling for the rest of the year is a bit MUCH!

  • Joe - 13 years ago

Suspend the Princiapl, kep the student!

  • Will - 13 years ago

Colonial Forge has a history for being overly excessive when it comes to punishing students. They have some sort of penal mentality at that school, but I guess that comes from their former principal Dr. Martin!

  • Kelly - 13 years ago

Come on!! Karen Spillman has absolutely no sense of humor. These schools today have become so ridiculous on their idea of rules and what is appropriate. What the principal is using as "charges" against the boy, give me a break. I could see suspending him for 2 or 3 days, but come on Stafford Schools, get over yourselves. People need to remember that kids are still kids.

  • roni - 13 years ago

Colonial Forge is in Stafford. Read the article!!!

  • Stephen - 13 years ago

What's going on with Spotsy county schools? Seems you can't even be human any more without getting expelled. Banana costumes are hilarious, and no one was hurt in yet another stupid overblown 'zero tolerance' crisis.
