My recent visit to downtown Edmonton was chaotic to say the least. I am really wondering where they are going to put all the people that hit downtown for events as large as this arena is going to attract. North Edmonton was originally chosen for the Coliseum as being an opportunity to revitalize that part of town. When 50th street bridge was abandoned as a corridor, capilano freeway came in, giving credence to an arena there. Access to the current Rexall Place is much better than access into downtown by car. The current Rexall place has excellent access with the LRT. People basically get off and walk in. The new arena downtown is hard to imagine. One can barely see a free space of real estate downtown. Of course, a lot of development is around the college on 104 and living downtown now has its drawbacks and benefits. Edmonton Transit still has some strange ideas of how to support the downtown area from surrounding communities. Real Estate is getting too expensive, and people are not making the money required to support that kind of real estate. It's going to be a concrete nightmare downtown. The whole east end of Edmonton has been struggling to stay relevant in the big picture of Edmonton. The Coliseum at least was an attraction to the area. Unfortunately, east Edmonton around the Coliseum did not really jump on the development band wagon soon enough and actually have a lack of supportive services around the "coliseum" - not enough restaurants for one. People come in on the LRT, then can't really find any services in the area, and so head out I'm sure to other locations. One may say this is negative, but it also ensures that people go home and don't hang out around the facility needlessly, allowing the community surrounding it to get on with their daily lives without 60,000 people hanging out. The LRT was built particularly for the Coliseum and Stadium traffic. Now you are going to build an arena that is not even on the LRT line. Strange thinking in Edmonton. I was too young to understand most of the discussion when the LRT was built and a freeway intersected my community, but I do know that arena building is disruptive and the roadways to it will destroy a gentle downtown.

I Agree if Northlands wants to compete fairly for concerts and events, there should no longer be any money given Northlands by the city and if they do the same should be given to the competition.. Hey wait didn't Northlands just borrow a tonne of money to facilitate their expo expansion??? (parting shot) hey Northlands I hear octane almost made money from their champ car race, and they never had the financial support that you got from the city!!!!!

Of course mr caterina is behind northlands, he's on the board!!! I have a solution, it's crazy but how about we leave lacrosse, oil kings and make Katz buy an arena football team let them all play at northlands and have concerts and hockey at the new rink, don't forget new arena means no recall place name rights for northland... On another note how come the city paid for the original rink then gave it to northlands free and clear, there a not for profit organization that cashes in on the nievity of the residents of Edmonton!!!!
