Have you been reading or hearing about propranolol or beta-blockers for autism-related behavior challenges?

My son was prescribed propranolol 15 months ago. The results have had an amazing impact on some of his issues. He is now less anxious and more accepting of change. The biggest impact was reducing his startle response. In the past, he would hit our dog if a loud bark startled him; that has not happen once in the last 15 months. And he now goes to his brother's basketball game without earplugs and tolerates the quarterly horns.

I voted, but my choice of how I heard about it was not listed. We actually take our son to see Dr. Beversdorf and after my son discussed (with prompting, of course) with Dr. Beversdorf his desire to be more normal and more happy, Dr. Beversdorf discussed the study with us. My son is so hopeful that there will be a time very soon that something will help him feel more normal and much happier. So happy for dedicated doctors.

All I can say is that, without my knowing about these positive effects beforehand, my daughter's doctor prescribed propanolol for my daughter. At first, he prescribed 2 doses twice a day. I did not get the dosing right... hence he put her on an extended release dose. After one week we noticed a dramatic improvement in her anger, anxiety, agression, and overall mood! WOW! After sixteen years of unplesant behavior, I can truely say I LIKE my child!!! (Not to be confused... I have ALWAYS LOVED her!!!) It's just that now, we can get along and can be together without enormous fights (for no apparent reason)! She is also more attentive and in her own words "Happier!" Thank you Dr. Diamato for trying something new with my child! I do hope that longer term studies show that it IS safe for children to use... especially over long term!
