Some of the comments are amazing!!!!!!!! Hard-working people??? Who cares.......most are, and they take care of their LEGAL responsibilities. And let's not forget something.........I know of NO insurance company that will cover unlicensed/illegal drivers. Thereby leaving further burdens on those of us who are hard-working, living here legally, driving legally. Take the vehicles, perhaps these hard-working, yet dishonest people will learn a lesson. I doubt it, but one can hope!

People that drive without a drivers license are the ones that typically flee the scene of a traffic collision. They don't take responsibility for their actions already. Now we are going to benefit them by not impounding their cars when they make a bad decision by driving a vehicle while they are unlicensed.
Let's just start telling all of our youth it is okay to break the law.

Me and my husband are unlicensed drivers.but my husband is a very hard working man..I feel that if you are drinking and driving, that you should get your car impounded, because its a hazzard to have drunk people on the road, that kills innocent people..There is alot of license drivers out there that should have their license at all..So an impounded car can hurt hard working families..As it is the Economy is still bad and we cant afford to lose our JOBS.

This is just another way for Gov Brown to get his illegals off the hook. There are lots of people from Mexico, Korea, Viet Nam and other country's that have come through the front door and did it right like our Grandfathers and Fathers before him did. We in California are known as the back door to ELIS ISLAND where u don't have to tell any one and want things given to them when the rest of us work our tales off. Why do you think Obama is coming back to California and going to the Hispanic Community. It worked for Brown

i think that there as much hazzard as a license driver the only difference is that they dont have a card that shows they are allowed to drive so i dont know why they dont just give them licenses and get over it. theres to many ignorant people in the world that think that unlicense people are a hazzard i dont see how . there should be an age limit to unlicense driving like with everything else . we are in the new age race shouldnt matter ......

i like the idea but i thing they should be given a ticket atleast i mean they get to keep there car but to avoid all this why not just pass a law that lets them get a license its almost the same thing they get to drive threw checkpoints with out any trouble . just my point of view.

I am married to an unlicensed driver. He driver much better then most of the licensed drivers on the road. I am licensed and he drives better then I . They arrest drunk driver and leave there cars for them to get back into their cars and drive drunk over and over with out much penalty. An unlicensed drivers car is impounded for thirty days, is charged with a storage fee for the tow company who has a contract with that particular county. DUI check points are for just that. DUI. Start taking the vehicles from drunk drivers for thirty days with storage fees. Maybe, just maybe we will save the life of an innocent person who happens to be in front of or any where around a drunk driver. Oh and by the way, the unlicensed driver i am refering to is not an illegal , just someone who didn't pay a traffic fine and had his license suspended.

What is the purpose of having a driver's license than? Does it only imply during checkpoints or also if they get caught during a traffic stop for something else? People are going to drive without licenses regardless but as I see it; by letting them keep their car it's okay to keep driving. I think it's unfair for basically allowing unlicensed drivers on the road. Times are hard yes. But the law is the law. If you don't have a license you shouldn't be allowed to drive at all.

Re: "Many law enforcement agencies immediately tow unlicensed drivers’ vehicles from checkpoints and impound them for 30 days, leaving vehicle owners on the hook for fines and daily fees."

This could not be further from the truth; the unlicensed drivers and/or owners who let these folks drive are leaving themselves on the hook when they fail to make sure a properly licensed driver is given access to a car, not the law enforcement agencies that follow the law and impound these cars. Place responsibility for the poor choices being made where it belongs, please!
