Sticking with an older release and will be switching to another distribution with working desktop ASAP. Evaluating going back to Deian right now.

11.04 version was fine, 11.10 has to many things not better even worst, the new windows have to be closed over the side panel, programs and e.t.c. i have to type in first to find them, the power management is total rubbish and if that,s all the can do to make it harder, then good night for 11.10 try to be window 7 or worst

    god bless the team t.w.

Unity was like pouring glue into the poor machine. Gnome shell is survivable but OMG how unintuitive it feels...
That the installation broke my mappings via /etc/fstab feels like the final insult. Mint! Debian! SuSE! Whatever! Here I come.

Upgraded the day it was released. All good; only disappointment was that it uninstalled Avidemux and that the app is no longer available. What's up with that!?

On my other machine, however, the upgrade was a total disaster! Couldn't boot up. Found a work around on the Web but it wasn't satisfactory. Did a fresh install on that machine and it's back to OK.

I just got a new notebook and it took me all of five minutes to see that Unity was a disaster. I ditched it for Xubuntu 11.10. Much better. I'll be staying with Lucid on my desktop for a while.

I am on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. I will use this version until my boot USB breaks.

I was already behind by a few versions, so glad to update to 11.10

I'm sticking with the 10.10; A real "10" Ubuntu release.

The reason? I'm not sure if I like so much the new Unity or Gnome3 desktop environments, as the Gnome2 series are almost bugs-free already, and it's a very easy and direct to the point DE.

Further, since the kernel 2.6.38 shipped with Ubuntu 11.04, I can't control the screen brightness anymore; Still worse, it starts with the backlight set to minimum which makes the screen barely visible. My laptop is a (not very rare) HP 6735b with ZM80 64 bits processor and a HD3200 ATI graphics card (likely it also affects to other models and brands). I filled the bug 6 months ago at Launchpad right when the 11.04 was released but just a few weeks ago the developers tagged it as a "confirmed" bug.

Then, I tried Ubuntu 11.10 BETA2 but this very "visible" problem was still there, which I so informed, as well; Not answers on this problem whatsoever, not workarounds, nothing. Googling also didn't help as someones reported solutions but it didn't work for me.

The final release of Ubuntu 11.10 it also has the problem.

I know this is a Linux kernel regression (along with some power consumption problems discovered by Phoronix on such kernel and up), and not properly an Ubuntu bug as these same problems affects to openSUSE, Fedora, Arch Linux, etc. with the said kernel and later ones, but more than half a year it should be time enough to get it solved? I so think.

Got some problems with fglrx and dual HD6950's /lockups/, but I guess that's from the 11.8 blob, I'll give it some time before catalyst 11.10 comes officially out, post-release version in jockey doesn't install at all. Nautilus crashes all the time, but I'll try to remove Ubuntu-one as suggested above in the comments. Guess there's no luck with automatically starting gnome-shell yet, but that will be sorted out too, hopefully soon. For now I'll preinstall 11.04 for a while and upgrade back again at a later time.

I am really enjoying the new Unity! Very clean, it works in a way that is very intuitive for me. Getting flash working was a PAIN though.

I was just in a wreckless mood after a long tedious day at work, on the edge of a weekend with nothing much slated to do, the pop-up box said, "Do you feel lucky, punk?" and I said, "Bring it on tough guy" and clicked the spot.

and y'know, there was a scary moment where flash didn't upgrade and claimed to cause all sorts of devastation to the install process, I even had to hold the big silver button to shut the thing down by force, drew a deep breath and brought it back up again, but here it is, it even found its wifi, the screens are nice (even using multiple monitors) and so far, knock on wood, I really quite like it!

I don't think upgrading to 11.10 is worth the hassle.

  • qhartman - 12 years ago

I've upgraded one of my machines, but I'm holding off on the others until I decide how I like it. My first impression, I'm not happy. The global menu thing and the sidebar and taking away all the useful stuff I put in my gnome panels.... None of this works well with how I like to work.

  • MichaelTunnell.com - 12 years ago

I am still on 10.10 because of the lack luster release of 11.04 but I am going to test 11.10 to see if it meets my standards otherwise I will have to decide if I want to stick with 10.10 or if I want to change distros...I don't know yet so I haven't voted in the poll yet.

I like Ubuntu but I customize it so much that if they make my customizations not possible that will piss me off. - Also the Global Menu is stupid...I hate the wannabe mac crap.

Finally, I've dropped Unity and Gnome3, I've switched to LXDE.

  • Dr. Fly - 12 years ago

I already have it on my desktop...waiting to upgrade the laptop until the weekend, after making backups and taking care of other Windows software stuff on there (it's a dual-boot).

  • BSK1 - 12 years ago

Since Edgy I'm doing a fresh install as soon Alpha gets out ; OK, I had some "hick ups" here and there but nothing so serious that Ubuntu forums and Google search can't fix, right? Anyway,at first I didn't like Unity but as the days go by,I like it and I think it was a good change for Ubuntu.

  • Jay - 12 years ago

You need to uninstall ubuntu one though, otherwise nautilus will constantly crash, other than that 11.10 is utter class, love it

  • lampe - 12 years ago

i have changed to crunchbang Linux but i tested Ubuntu Yesterday andere i dont Like unuity even with the updates.

  • veejsh - 12 years ago

My network printer doesn't work starting with Ubuntu version 11.04. Doesn't work with 11.10 either. So, I'm sticking with the 10.10 release, which works good.

  • DjBacon - 12 years ago

I upgraded, but i cannot work with unity or gnome3. also few of small but crucial programs doesn't work anymore. I'm trying xfce but i think i will be installing 11.04 back. 11.10 is faster for sure, but gnome classic is buggy and it is the best desktop manager for me, so i'm going back to 11.04 because i could work perfectly there.

P.S. Why gnome2 is being pushed away. I think there are plenty of users who would rather use gnome2 than unity or gnome3 despite both of them being forced to users as better.

  • moragos - 12 years ago

based on previous releases - I'll be waiting for a couple of days before I upgrade.

If this version is as bad as 11.04 I'm downgrading to 10.10 or 10.04

  • JPP - 12 years ago

Perfect 10 is perfect for me.

  • LooseR - 12 years ago

Yes. Upgraded on my Notebook. Now there is 2 weeks test period, and I'll proceed with upgrade on my wife's notebook and my desktop.

  • fahrertuer - 12 years ago

I did the upgrade and I was regretting it within minutes.
Unity and the Gnome 3 shell may be nice to show off, but they are just plain unuseable when it comes to the real world

  • cedric - 12 years ago

Already in 11.10 since alphas on notebook and desktop. But yesterday, get the server updated to 11.10

  • pROCKrammer - 12 years ago

    I will be with 10.04 LTS :)
