This poll should have been separated by the age of the voters. Hands down the "creepiest" was The Outer Limits, Unlike The Twilight Zone, The Outer Limits focused on scaring the viewer. It did not engage so much in cold war or philosophical themes like The Twilight Zone did. Since it does not appear in New Year's Day marathons, young people are unaware of The Outer Limits.

Though I am not a fan of horror shows (which seem to be mostly what the poll is tracking) but am a serious fan of Sci-Fi, I am definitely not a fan of most POLLS. Your poll fits right into that group I like to call “THE MOST HORRIBLE POLLS OF ALL TIME”. For it to have any meaning at all to me I would need to see the number of votes and not a percent. I would also like to see the guidelines that were originally set up for taking the poll (the basic thought process). And I would like to know how you defined creepy. The definition in general is “having or causing a sensation of repulsion, horror, or fear, as of creatures crawling on the skin”. You would also need to limit the selections to a single show, or have a category for both a show, and a series. After all, there is a wide range of how people feel about each individual show in a series. And for me, creepy would also need to contain “disturbing” as a major factor. While many of your shows are very good shows, I did not see anywhere in the data that you provided to indicate that it was limited to made for TV and not movies shown on TV. As a matter of fact, what I did see was the word “show” and not “shows”, thus unless I am wrong on this, most if not all of what was listed were series and not an individual show. As for what is Creepy in a show, just go to the net and search for lists of “MOST DISTURBING MOVIES OF ALL TIME”. Then watch a few of those and I would bet you would be very creped out. And though you do not say it, I bet you are looking at shows in the United States. Most other countries have television as well. A number of those shows listed have TV shows as well as movies and re-makes and so on. I did not want to take the time to research these but come on guys (or is it girls), you poll made me think back to ones I used to do (not create) for Proctor and Gamble where the questions were designed in such a way to gain a response of what they wanted to hear and not gather good intell. The one thing I did learn in taking polls is that unless you go into a group that is very closely aligned such as Army Privates that are radio operators, you will have a hard time of really defining what is being looked at. And the range of deviation in information is out of this world. For example, I watch and have watched most SCI-FI movies that have been released in the last 80 years, and I would put at the top of the list, probably in the first 5, the movie SIGNS, as one of the most disturbing movies I ever watched. Now I have 22 grandkids and most of them have watched a lot of SCI-FI movies with me and yet not one of them thinks that signs is all that disturbing. Now you might say that is because they are used to the blood and guts and super special effects. Not true. I had to stop showing one movie to my grandkids that creped them out so bad, they don’t even like to talk about it. And that movie was made in the 1970’s. And, no, I did not forget to put the name down here. Maybe I should take a poll as see what the results are. I did not see any lengthy comments listed which tells me something. A number of comments were, like mine, not directly related to the movie choices. That tells me something as well. I do acknowledge that a lot of the shows listed were scary, but I believe them to be far from creepy. Many of the shows listed were very structured in what they could show on TV at the time (for the older shows), and highly limited to run time as an hour show could be only 45 minutes or less with all the commercials. I would bet that most people would not take the time to read this and I am not sure it will even be posted so I will just say, If anyone is interested in that movie that the Grandkids will not watch again to this day, let me know by way of a comment on this site and I will post another comment with it.

Sapphire and Steel - UK program of the 80's - Scary using atmosphere.

    Alfred Hitchcock Presents.

  • Rob - 13 years ago

Come on, the scariest show on TV has to be Fox News

  • TurboSpencer - 13 years ago

X-Files "Home" absolutely. We recommended a friend watch the X-files for the first time the evening this happened to show. OMG I thought we had lost a friend forever. Very disturbing. I will never forget it. Love the new American Horror Story...but doesn't compare. X-Files was more cerebral...less about blood and guts.

    Salem's Lot (1979)
Dark Night Of The Scarecrow (1981)

  • Kevin - 13 years ago

Does anyone remember Dark Shadows? That was one of the scariest shows on TV, very cutting edge for the time. Barnabas Collins, vampires, werewolves and ghosts in a creepy old house. The cemetary and crypts kept me awake for hours (until the next episode came on)!

Sorry...OVER 50 years ago! Long day today...

Twilight Zone made a very respectable showing on this list, considering that it was produced almost 50 years ago. Think how people would have rated it in 1959! And I agree that one nice aspect of TZ is that it is able to be creepy without being gory (a la the end of Goldblum's "The Fly").

  • joann - 13 years ago

dead like me was a great series, though short lived

  • Guest - 13 years ago

Alfred Hitchock's TV show had some of the creepiest episodes ever.

  • gimmetheoldies - 13 years ago

I'm at least happy to see the original Twilight Zone made it. Today's horror stories are nothing but blood and gore. TZ was creepy without all of that. A true classic.

  • Marky - 13 years ago

No one does creepy like David Lynch. I don't think many of these voters have ever watched the series...

  • TheTruth - 13 years ago

What??? No Keeping up with the Kardashians or Jersey Shore. Now those shows really do scare me.

  • ashy - 13 years ago

What???! No Rod Serling's Night Gallery. Used to scare the crap out me every week!

  • xjdavid - 13 years ago

Why embarrassing cRAIG? American Horror Story rocks! Jessica Lange deserves an Emmy for episode 3. Best show I've seen in years, MUCH better than the BORING "Walking Dead".

  • Steven - 13 years ago

I'm happy to see "American Gothic" remembered (Gary Cole's performance was wonderfully chilling and I love watching it on DVD) but I have to go with "X-Files". When it was great (early seasons), it gave episodes that were beyond creepy. My pick for the creepiest -- "Home" (the family of incestuous halfbreeds who kept their dismembered but still living mother under the bed). The fact that Fox chose this episode as the one to begin it's Sunday night run with still makes me laugh.

  • cRAIG - 13 years ago

the fact that American Horror Story leads this poll is embarrassing...

  • Elphaba - 13 years ago

Absolutely Millennium. Apparently the voters need a little schooling.

  • Tom Connolly - 13 years ago

My vote is for Millennium. Individual episodes of some shows were disturbing ("Unruhe" X-Files, 1996), but the very first episodes of Millennium were unremitting horror and despair. It's astonishing to me that it made it on network television. Images from that show are still in my head years later.

  • Karen - 13 years ago

So happy to see Millennium listed - the minute I read the headline, that show popped into my head.
