Should fiction about black characters or black issues be left to black writers?

BooksofSoul - I definitely think we should tell our own stories! I refused to see "The Help" too. In fact, the thought of the story being a #1 book and #1 movie was disappointing. A friend of mine auditioned for the lead but refused her agent because she didn't want to explain to her children why she was playing a maid. Lena Horne refused to play a maid! Black Readers have to support Black Writers, too. My mother and good friends LOVED "The Help." However, being a writer - I had to self-publish because major and independent publishing houses passed on my debut novel, "Black Girl @ the Gay Channel." A social comment on two fractions of society experiencing repression BUT truly about the myth of repression. It's got to be a condition we sign up for. And today, I choose not to. Thanks for reading!
