Gingrich obviously has a grasp on the issues. Cain..not so much. The two smartest candidates are Gingrich and Romney.

I would love to see both paired as our GOP candidates but I want Herman to be the President. Sure Newt has the Washington beltway experience which is exactly what worries me about him. I've seen him fall for Global Warming and other things the left throw insist on.s With Herman setting the main agenda and Newt's experience of steering things through the political maze, we might just find a way out of the mess the past administrations have left us with. I think they's work well together, but I fear if Newt has full rein he'd fall back into DC same ol same ol.

Newt is always the smartest man in the room but Cain seems warm and grandfatherly (in a Reagan sort of way). I love his life story. He may not be the most scholarly, but he has excelled in every business endeavor he has ever attempted. He's not a polished politician so he has made mistakes ....but a businessman is what our country needs....not another slick talking politician. There's something very special about Herman Cain. I think he's the leader America needs at this moment in history......a black conservative to lead Americans off the liberal entitlement plantation. As Herman said last night, EVERYONE needs some skin in the game.

Both came across likeable and knowledgeable. This would be a good ticket both would clean up obama and biden in debates. Rubio on the ticket also would be nice either way those should be in the White House or cabinet. Its good to see real ideas versus slogans from obama that turn out to be lies.

To me, Newt is always the smartest and most innovative person in the room. Newt.org has many solutions worked out that would aid in breaking down all the Bama Dem Leftist items in every one of the pieces of legislation that is killing America. Whether it is energy ,health, education, brain science, the Contract has it all there. Herm is a great guy and could be a cabinet member of perhaps even a VP but for me Newt is the guy.

Cain was the winner because the real contest was between the leadership styles each was able to project. Newt was more knowledgeable but Cain more clearly demonstrated the ability to persuade others to follow his leadership. They compliment each other very well and if Newt can swallow his ego and agree to serve as number two, they will make a fantastic team.

Gingrich/Cain for president. Gingrich has the insight in what works in the WH and Cain has the insight in what is needed by job producing employers.

  • cesca54 - 13 years ago

Both were good and if it were Santorum winning I would vote for him. Anyone other than Obama. Obama needs to go.

Newton is a "Used Car Salesman," Is now, and has been for many moons!
That's what "salesmen" do. They pull statistics out of their brochure of
facts, and play them in order to make a "sale." When he was principal to
The Contract for America, he was voting aginst some of the ways and
means he advocated. And his "marriage proposals" must have been some
dusies! You see how much they meant - Har!!

  • Walt - 13 years ago

The smartest doesn,t always make the best, as leadership is concerned.
Our own presidential history demonstrates that.
Cain has, IMO, plenty on the ball, and would seek council & delegate
In a wise & prudent fashion.

  • Jeff - 13 years ago

I think Newt and Herman would pair nicely as POTUS and VP or VP and POTUS. Newt is articulate and Herman has horse sense. This would be a great combination to have in D.C.

  • Frank - 13 years ago

Susan, when you say "His preachy, Professor approach rubs folks the wrong way.. " please know that you are not speaking for me. I would find it extraordinarily refreshing to have a candidate that I KNOW will have facts and figures at his fingertips, and if his style is professorial, well, I can live with that if it means that we finally get an intellectually competent candidate.

There is no candidate in the current field who understands America's problems more than Gingrich, and competency is what we need to put this country back on the right path.

The people of merica were winners last night! This was more informative and productive and it was not about who could get over the other. Cain & Newtt.

  • John - 13 years ago

It was a wonderful and refreshing debate with a great format. Having a discussion about the issues gave the opportunity to hear suggestions on fixing government. Both gentlemen did a great job of primarily staying focused on the discussed issues and not "talking points" giving all of us an opportunity to understand their views. Hopefully we will see more of these going forward.

Michelle took the words out of my mouth:
    We the People won!
It was thrilling to see/hear two grownups speak substantively.
Allow me to paraphrase the 'other Michelle':
... For the first time in a long time, I felt proud and reminded that my country does indeed have leaders qualified to lead.

  • Bob - 13 years ago

Who care, they both have ethics problems.

  • Dimmesdale - 13 years ago

The only problem tonight was that Cain and Gingrich are still eyeing each other as potential VP material, so both were very reluctant to highlight whatever differences there might be between them on policy and platform. But for sure, this is THE format to get to know what a candidate is really made of -- lets hope it catches on. Example: I learned tonight that Cain, although certainly not at Gingrich's intellectual level, is smart and thoughtful and has a pretty darn good grip on these important issues. [Although he needed a minute to remind himself of the difference between a defined benefit and defined contribution pension plan, once that kicked in he spoke intelligently on the topic.]

  • lukuj - 13 years ago

This was by far the best debate and the best format for the "debate", though I would call it more of a discussion. It was great to see the two put forth ideas without tearing each other down. It seems to me this is absolutely the best way for voters to really learn about the candidates. I am only sorry that there was probably a very small audience for the debate because of the timing against a big footfall game. It will be repeated later and will be online, but I'm not sure the debate was publicized enough to bring people to hear it at those times either.

Is it just me, or did Hermain Cain seem a little under water matched up against the former Speaker of the House? What does everyone think?

I think considering the week Mr. Cain has just had.... He did better than Obama has ever done on his Best day! Newt has his talent.. like cozying up to Nancy Pelosi in advertisments when it suits him and "Callista" . Not to mention the other talent for doing a 180 on Paul Ryans plan.. by dissing it how many weeks or months ago.. while using it as the Conservative Model .. I cant remember how many times today...I dont feel I could trust Newt..... He talks a good game but once comfortable in the WH .. He'd make GWBush look like a real Conservative...A Much better scenario would be the VP position for Newt..His preachy, Professor approach rubs folks the wrong way.. I like and admire Herman Cains' honesty and willingness to be the non politician.. Im happy to let Herman be Herman and Newt the Nutty Professor.. Either way I think we are going to see both of these men running against Obama or Hillary.. Hillary would be a tough one for Newt as He cozys up to her and Bill far too often for my liking.. Herman Cain.. the GodFather!!

  • Eukardios - 13 years ago

I think in terms of both style and substance Gingrich won clearly. That said, both came across as likeable, credible alternatives to Obama so in that respect I think the debate benefited both of them. On the whole, I really liked the friendly, collegial air of the debate and I wish more of the debates used this format.

  • Jimmylynn - 13 years ago

I think they both did well in the debate. Cain was more general in his responses and Gingrich had much more detailed and thought out answers. Both men showed respect for the other and avoided any appearances of tearing down their opponent. Both seemed to agree, in general, on many of the issues. I think both demonstrated that they have a strong respect and a genuine like for each other. A Cain/Gingrich ticket may be more likely than many may imagine. I think it would be a great ticket. I especially liked Cain's friendly dig at Gingrich on one of the last exchanges when he ask Gingrich what he would like to tackle first as Vice President.

  • Craig Quiter - 13 years ago

Here's another poll about the debate. http://www.wepolls.com/p/4694819 Of course Gingrich won. Cain is a joke.

  • Mario - 13 years ago

Newt also was stumped on a question towards the end. I really don't think that it's a bad thing to stop a moment to think about the question before answering. Bottom line is I thought they were both fantastic and I would gladly vote for either one of them. If they were together on the ticket I would vote for them regardless of who's on top.

  • Alan - 13 years ago

They were both good, but Newt had more substance. Cain is good at outlining his "approach", but that is just a starting point. Newt has more very specific ideas. I don't like how Cain was stumped and asked Newt to go first on two of the questions

  • John - 13 years ago

Newt is the most powerful "doer" the GOP has had in 20 years. You forget about doing the first republican majority, doing 4 balanced budgets, doing entitlement reform, doing paying off $400billion in debt and much much more.

  • Eabjr - 13 years ago

I wouldn't say Newt "won" per say---he had a lot of information (article said command of the issues) the key is what's next? Cain to me shows why he has been an executive --he is a doer. So it was a "doers" perspectives vs. an academic's details. Together its a great combo either way...
