With all due respect to your "42 years as a pilot and air traffic controller," do yourself a favor and save your pilot talk behind your computer please. An airport is just one "minute" part of a city plan, so don't make it sound like it's as important as police and fire stations. Maintaining proper flight controls and dealing with unexpected errors are all part of a job as a pilot or an air traffic controller; don't make it sound like you're "above" anyone else. Plus, we all know how much you want to keep your job. An airport is an airport, it can never be as important as emergency services and city planners. So get over it, or cover your ears if you don't like hearing what you're hearing.
