Is LSU-Alabama the right matchup for the BCS championship?

Like most, I think Alabama had their chance. It is interesting that on all the blogs the entire country thinks it should be OK State and the only people defending Alabama are its own fans.

  • Greg O - 12 years ago

Look there is a thousand thing that can be said about Bama Vs LSU. The cowboys defense is not even in the TOP 100 college teams. You really think they can play with LSU your sadly mistaking. Is Bama the best to play them with the #1 Defence in the country ? YES. They have the best shot they just dont have an offense. Thequestion is ? Why dont they get a kicker ? these answers we may never know bottom line. They need a play off in college but theres too much money in these Bowl GAmes folks. So we will never see a true nation championship game or Best team for any given year. Its hard to deny that Sabin is one of the greatest college coaches at this time where did he coach before BAMA.... LSU.

I'm boycotting the (not) championship game until we have a playoff. I'll vote with my wallet.

  • Chris Grant - 12 years ago

People forget that the S.E.C. President tried to come up with a 4 team playoff system the year Auburn went undefeated. ALL the other conferences said "NO!!!".
It comes down to the system that's in place. EVERYONE agreed on this system years ago. Stop complaining OR start working towards a solution.
Oklahoma State lost to an UNRANKED Team, who finished 6-6.
Bama lost to a RANKED Team, who finished undefeated 12-0.
The S.E.C has the last 5 BCS Championships!!! Reason, they're the BEST TEAMS!!!
L.S.U. and Bama are the best teams. PERIOD!!! ROLL TIDE ROLL!!!
Bama Wins by 10!!! I can promise you that they will not leave the same amount of points they left on the field last time. Saban will have them locked in!!!

this is absolute garbage. alabama already played lsu and lost in an "epic" 9-6 thriller at home.by the way, espn and especially mark may, are quite biased towards the sec. i agree the the sec is the top conference but it is not miles ahead of everybody else. lsu would probably beat ok state, but then again, maybe not. ok state should have at least gotten a chance. this way the sec is sure to win the title because they are the only ones in it. all those "beatdowns" the sec laid on their opponents in the last five championship games? other than the two ohio state games, the other matchups were pretty competitive. ou could have beat florida if they didn't shoot themselves in the foot in the red zone. beating texas without colt mccoy was like beating the gators without tim tebow. finally, didn't oregon lose to auburn on the final play of the game? sure sounds like a blowout to me. yes, i do hate the sec, i admit it, but you can't say these are the best two teams for sure just because the media tells you they are. alabama is very good, true, but so is ok state. i have no argument with lsu, they won their conference, something alabama did not do! the only people other than espn and cbs (who broadcast sec games) who wanted to see this game are alabama fans. i hope the ratings are terrible. even if alabama wins , what does that prove?

  • RUSS - 12 years ago

This is all about MONEY and what ESPN wants for championship game. This just proves that there needs to be a playoff system. No excuse why it can't be done , since division 2 (FCS) has been doing it for years, except BCS doesn't want to lose control. Won't be watching and all who want playoff system should do the same and let the tv ratings show this is wrong matchup.

  • Jared Wiseman - 12 years ago

Quality schedule? Kent State, Penn State, Northern Texas and Georgia Southern??????? How can you be in the national championship and you werent even in the conference championship?? OK State blew out Texas Tech 66-6 Oklahoma 44-10 and many more Alabama let Georgia Southern score three touchdowns and only won by 20 something. Another thing how come all the computers ranked them in second kinda funny huh?

  • RYAN - 12 years ago

NICK SABAN DYES HIS HAIR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FOR ALL YOU DIE-HARD LSU FANS, SPREAD THE WORD AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE THAT NICK SABAN DYES HIS HAR, THE BRAND IS REDKEN AND THE COLOR IS MOROCCAN SAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GEAUX TIGERS!!!!!

  • Billy the goat - 12 years ago

BCS=SEC=$$$ - Try to remember to pay close attention next year to the same old SEC bias for the college football season. Who will be the lucky SEC school thats gonna be pre-picked to win it all. Ever notice throughout the football season that when an SEC team is is in the top 2 or 3, no other conferences can climb any higher in the rankings. But SEC teams climb the fastest and when they lose, they never drop in rankings too far, but every other conference does.

  • BCS official (anonymous) - 12 years ago

Us BCS gods in the SEC want to thank the Alabama Crimson Tide for smashing Auburn in the 1st half last year then letting Auburn win to play in the title game. Your reward for doing that is you get to play in the title game this year because you came in 2nd place in your conference, you even earned a bye week when you didnt play in the conference championship game, and you already lost to LSU. Caution: other college conferences do not try this yourself as it only pertains to the SEC

  • Tommy T - 12 years ago

thats a grate ideal, BCS officials listen up........Get rid of every single college football program out there including the ones with rich tradition like USC, Oklahoma, etc.,etc, and just make one conference in the whole U.S. The new BCS conference with LSU, Alabama,Auburn and Florida and coached every year by Nick Saban and Les Miles and only play the titles games at LSU and Alabama. That should solve everything since BCS officials think every other school isnt good enough to be in the new BCS conference

  • mr nobody - 12 years ago

thanx 'bama for laying down against in-state brother school Auburn last year in the 2nd half so they can play for the title game and make sure an SEC team played for the championship...you know you could've beaten Auburn but chose to take a dive because you had no chance at the title game....good strategy. Oklahoma tried your exact strategy and laid down so their brother school Ok State could get a chance at the title game, but got screwed. It worked for the SEC but not the Big 12...'Bama, no conference title, not even in the title game, already lost to LSU and yay, their in... So so sad........ Do this...... Create a brand new conference called the BCS conference with only 4 teams in it: LSU, Alabama, Florida and Auburn, that way you BCS crooks will continue tradition that only SEC teams win title every year since these are the only teams that get all the hype and big money to recruit...

  • sooner1 - 12 years ago

I can believe all the BS about Alabama playing a tougher schedule. They only beat 3 teams with winning records this year! What joke!

  • Nick - 12 years ago

This is by far the right matchup. To all those, who say that the OSU would be a more interesting game needs to shut up, it is about having the two best teams, not the most interestng. Plus, you two should learn to love a defensive football game, they can be just as exciting. My last point it, if the #2 team in the nation just barely looses to the #1 team in the nation, doesn't that just prove they are number #2? If you were comparing any two 1 loss teams, and one lost to the #1 team in overtime, and the other loss to an unranked team, it would not even be a question which team should be ranked higher. Stupid argument by people who are just tired of SEC dominance, and/or don't care about justice for the best teams, just care about how exciting it is for them to watch. Btw, I am a BIG 10 fan so I am not bias. Go PSU!

  • So Cal Pete - 12 years ago

No, it's not right. It assumes the supremacy of the SEC, and that's an assumption that shouldn't be allowed when the feedback from every single sport at every single level in the country proves - year in and year out - that assuming superiority is a mistake.

Polls and opinions almost never accurately reflect who the top two teams in any given sport are. In the NFL, we'd have a different defending Super Bowl champion. In the NBA, ditto. Etc.

So as long as college football insists upon having an anointed champion (versus installing a playoff system ... you know, where every week of the playoffs actually IS like a playoff, and so is the regular system for every team competing for a playoff spot, rather than just for those still mathematically capable of being anointed by the BCS), we need to err on the side of inclusiveness, and we need to assume that one conference just MIGHT not have all the best teams - that maybe, just maybe, some silly little ol' team from Oklahoma or California or somewhere else is as good. LSU won the SEC conference. That makes them the SEC's representative. By playing Alabama, the BCS ensures that we'll never know for sure whether another conference really does have a team as good. As usual, we'll just have to take the SEC and BCS's word for it.

  • JIMMY EWOLDT - 12 years ago

I THINK THE BCS GOT IT RIGHT THIS TIME. ONCE IN AWHILE, THE TWO BEST TEAMS JUST MIGHT COME FROM THE SAME CONFERENCE...WITH ALL DUE RESPECT, OKLAHOMA STATES' LOSS WAS A LITTLE WORSE THAN ALABAMA'S, TO AN UNRANKED IOWA STATE TEAM.

  • coonie - 12 years ago

We beat dem boys once, will do it again. Bring dem on Geaux TIGERS

  • Nation - 12 years ago

The LSU-Alabama game will be a conference championship game -a championship LSU has priviously won. I thought the BCS championship game was to be for a NATIONAL CHAMPION.The BCS is truely BS and Saban's vote of OS in third place shows the lack of any honest character Saban some "suspected" he had, You red tide fans have a yellow backed coach.

  • deakat - 12 years ago

Anyone who watched the Alabama/LSU game, IF they are honest with themselves, should be able to see that there was no clear winner in that game. Alabama beat itself with 4 missed field goals. No team was able to hold off LSU for 4 quarters EXCEPT Alabama even with those 4 missed field goals. Mike Gundy stated that the country would like to see a Big 12 offense against a SEC defense, but that the chance was lost now. We saw that in 2009 when Alabama beat Texas in the national championship. The only game that Alabama lost this year was to the #1 team in the country in overtime by a 3 points. Alabama was able to hold LSU to 9 points, something no other team has been able to do. Yes, Alabama deserves the chance!

  • hollis - 12 years ago

Well, LSu is unbeatable as we can see... Rematch against alabama is no use beacasue they had their chance to shine.... we even went into OT!!.. LSU should play a team we have n0t played in the SEC... I think Okalahoma is a better play than alabama.. Ur right, its all about the money and not the game anymore.

  • georged in California - 12 years ago

OSU has been overrated all year. Everyone knows the Big 12 has a porous pass defense.
When you lose to an unrated team and then OU lays down and gives you 3 touchdowns, how
can OSU realistically be #3 anyway? People may not want to see a rematch of Bama-LesU, but no one else has played to their level all year, especially not OSU. LesU would Kill OSU in Nawlins with that killer D. OSU's defense wouldn't be able to stop them anyway.
So maybe not Bama-LesU, but certainly OSU doesn't belong in the Championship. Not sure they are a BCS quality team, anyway. With a 28 year oldman quarterback who is 10 years older than some of his teammates. They ran up the score on the easy teams all year.
Any person who has gone pro in any sport should not be able to play amateur in another sport after turning pro. NCAA needs to fix that problem.
RGIII seems like the frontrunner for Heisman. So much fun to watch.

  • Justin - 12 years ago

Plain and simply 2006 Ohio State was #1 and Michigan was #2. Both were legitimate contenders back then, but Michigan was jumped by #3 Florida. Why because they won their conference, in a less spectacular fashion than Oklahoma State did this year. As well as nobody wanted to see a rematch. I understand the SEC is supposed to be the perennial power house of the NCAA, but there has always been a favored bias to their conference. Some would argue that Florida went on to win the National Title. Whose to say that Oklahoma State would not do the same. Either way it would of been a far more entertaining build up to the game. #2 Defense verse the #2 Offense. Some would argue that OSU's Defense is not up to par for this game, look what they did to Landry Jones this weekend, 2 Int's & 2 FF's in case you did not watch. No doubt about it the Oklahoma State and should I say Michigan fans are/were robbed of a chance. In closing the system is broken and should be fixed. Even if it is just the +1 system, where one only the Top 4 are in a playoff system.

  • al - 12 years ago

Not--- OST--->OSU (I made a pollster type mistake)
It was giving value to the two polls with pollster mistakes that caused the
pocket calculator of the BCS to tilt this decision to Alabama.
Otherwise it would be OSU vs LSU in the Final.

  • Scott - 12 years ago

OS in no way deserves to play in the BCS NC! They did right in picking the 2 best teams overall! Oh and by the way I am from OK! We shouldnt have lost! End of story! Then we would be in the NC! We have no one to blame but ourselves! SEC is the king of football! If you want your conference to be better then recruit better players!

  • Reauxster - 12 years ago

I really don't have a prob with the fact that they are both s/c, but I have two fold issue with the rest. ISS#1 - Title fights should be for folks with titles (div champ at least) and ISS#2 - a rematch that goes the other way ends up a tie. So you still don't have a clear winner.

I am a die hard LSU and SEC fan ... but with LSU's season as it is, they should have been able to finish against a Conference Champion ranked in the Top 5.... but thats just me..

  • al - 12 years ago

Only if Santa thinks you were very good and did not cry do you get another chance. Alabama would not qualify.

Facts: The Very Last game the three teams played:

Alabama vs BCS No. 24 Team 44 to 14 Played lowest ranked team..and....won by 30 points
LSU vs BCS No. 14 Team 42 to 10 Played a better team and....and ....won by 32 points
OST vs BCS No. 10 Team 44 to 10 Played the very best ranked team ..won by 34 points

Which team has not already lost to the other team?
Which two should play the final?
    Which would be worth watching?
    Use your pocket calculator.

  • Steve - 12 years ago

Everyone needs to keep in mind that the only people that will argue for the rematch are Alabama fans and anyone that stands to gain money from this rematch. A majority of the rest of America realizes that this is unfair.
ESPN's continuous lobbying and CBS running a ticker across the screen during the OU/OSU game stating that the rematch was on, was the low point of college football to date.

  • b10 - 12 years ago

So, all this about a 1 vs. 2 from the same conference, who already played once this year, getting bids for the national championship. I seem to remember a few years ago when Ohio State and Michigan were ranked 1 and 2, played each other during the regular season, and they DIDN'T get a rematch for the national championship. The BCS said things like "They already had their game." and "Nobody would want to watch a rematch of something that's already happened." Needless to say, it ended up being #1 vs. #3 for the title

  • fred - 12 years ago

Alabama played 8 teams whose offenses were ranked 90 or worse. Their non-conference schedule was 3 directional schools. OSU played 8 bowl bound teams. OSU lost to 6-6 ISU after finding out the womens BBall coach had been killed in a plane crash. He was a close friend to much of the staff and many of the players. Alabama was and is the darling of ESPN and they SHAMELESSLY politiced for Alabama for TWO weeks even giving Saban two full hours to lobby for Alabama on Gameday. This is the matchup ESPN wanted based on Television set numbers not based on who actually has the best resume. Remember you cannot spell Penis without ESPN.

  • ryan - 12 years ago

Oklahoma state would be blown out by lsu or alabama that would be very boring lsu and alabama is the 2 top teams they should play and are going to so get over it haters :)

  • Russ - 12 years ago

Game sponsors run fast to protect your dollar investment. No one, is going to watch this stale matchup but hard core sports fans from the southeast part of the United States. It is not even going to be the top draw on the networks the night it is played. Dull, Dumb and Dumbest.

  • Bob Draise - 12 years ago

Ok St lost to an unranked team in overtime. Bama lost to the number one team in overtime.
It will be interesting to see the rematch. I do beleive the BCS knows what is up.

  • Shane - 12 years ago

And whoever said if Bama wins it doesn't prove anything because LSU never got the chance to beat them at home....Do you even know where the title game is being held? Is New Orleans too far from Baton Rouge to be considered a home game? That's like when people say the Rose Bowl isn't a home game for USC when they go

  • Joe - 12 years ago

Alabama lost to a number One team by 3 points but Oklahoma State lost to who?

  • Shane - 12 years ago

Let me start off by saying that I hate both LSU and the Crimson Tide, now with that out of the way....How can anyone not think this rematch is the right call for the title?!? LSU scraped by during the first meeting which led to Bama's first, and only, loss. OK St lost to a 6-6 team in double OT. They couldn't even put them away in the first OT! OK St thinks they wanted to play LSU, but as it stands they're going to have their hands full with Stanford. Regardless of how I feel about either team, these are the two best teams in the nation and I can't wait for January

  • Goose - 12 years ago

Didn't Saban say in 2003 "No team should play for the National Championship if they have not won there conference?"

  • TK - 12 years ago

I'm falling asleep just thinking about this game. If I wanted to see another 9-6 game I'd watch the NFL. I think Mike Gundy said it best when he said, do you want to watch a 9-6 game or a 39-36 game?

  • Gayla - 12 years ago

Alabama does not deserve a rematch. Big 12 was the tougher league and teams this year. This is a rematch I will not tune in to watch. Just because the networks think the SEC match up will bring more revenues does not mean it is the right choice to have a rematch. Yes OSU lost a game after the death of OSU coaches and alumni. How well do think most people playthe day of a tragic death. So if Alabama wins what does it prove? A big fat tie.

  • JERRY - 12 years ago

It's obvious that the BCS is all about money and keeping the smaller schools from getting a chance to keep their programs competative year after year.

  • fantom - 12 years ago

That's the problem with fans offering opinions. They just want a new flavor of the week. The ones to go to for a true assessment of the match up are the coaches.

"Even with Oklahoma State's rout of Oklahoma on Saturday night, 42 of the 59 voters had Alabama No. 2, and none had the Crimson Tide below third.

Oklahoma State got the other 17 second-place votes and 36 third-place, but the Cowboys also were listed No. 4 on five ballots and No. 5 on one." USA Today

Number 1 and number 2 played regulation and ended in a tie. Neither team was able to put the ball in the end zone due to the country's top defenses. Do we play championships to match the best teams or do we just go for cinderella stories?

Frankly, no OT should be decided by a field goal. I agree with Holtz. Start each team at the 40 so they have to make a couple of first downs to even get close for a field goal. This is not soccer. It is football. Let Oklahoma State go to the SEC Western Division and play all year and see how they come out.

  • Jeff - 12 years ago

Hmmm... I think Alabama was the right choice. Why should a Big 12 champion who has 2 sometimes 3 worthwhile opponents (and still cant win all their games) be put ahead of a team that plays REAL teams all year? Wouldn't matter to me if it was a 2 down team if their matchups were alot stronger than the next team in line. BCS is flawed, need a playoff system!

  • Chris - 12 years ago

There is no way this is a championship matchup, all it comes down to is this is a glorified SEC championship game, that's it. Sure Alabama is a good team, but Oklahoma State won their conference and in their one loss the polls don't take into consideration the emotional toll the deaths of their basketball coaches the night befor the game had on this team. There is no way the BCS would have allowed this to happen if this had been two Big 12 teams in this situation, the hole system is biased because they think the SEC is so great and they are but so is the Big 12 as well as a couple of other conferences. This BCS screwup is more proof positive that the system is broken and needs to be fixed, when the computer rankings say it should be Okla. State but the human factor gives it to Alabama because of pure bias.

  • Aaron - 12 years ago

This is the right choice. Oklahoma nor Oklahoma State can play at the same level with these two SEC teams. I think it would be a better if a playuoff system was in place, but its not and I feel the BCS did its job. Congrats to Oklahoma State on a great season hopefully they will be victorious against Stanford.

  • Tom Benecke - 12 years ago

Alabama lost at "home" against a conference opponent, yet Oklahoma State won it's conference. Overall, the National Championship game should be played out w/ the different Conference Champions from around the Country. LSU clearly is the team to beat and the power house at present, if Alabama beats LSU it doesn't even prove their as good as LSU because LSU never got to play them at home. A playoff system needs to be set up where the top 10-12 teams have an elimination tournament where each conference is represented from around the Country. That would bring interest from every media outlet and raise the money every school desperately needs to help keep the lights on as universities struggle to keep up enrollment and pay their teachers.

  • Devil Dog - 12 years ago

How can your argue that ok st is a better team? The championship game is about 1 vs 2. Not one vs whoever has the saddest story. Look at the scheduling between bama and ok st. Look at key wins and key losses. Alabama had a more quality year in a higher quality confrence. The sec is the better confrence in college football with tougher weekends for the teams to compete in. Alabama deserves to play 100%

  • Baters - 12 years ago

Screw you all who choose to down the second best team in the nation. "They had their chance..." Whoever wins, this will no doubt be a good game. Alabama kicks ass on the field. So does LSU. If any other team were to have gone against them it would have been a blow out with the #1 team scraping the field
with the opponent. At least this is going to be an exciting game. A fight to the end. Same conference? Sure. But it just goes to show that the SEC DOMINATES!!!!!!!

  • Bert Rosenbaum - 12 years ago

As an LSU alum (1943) and a staunch LSU fan for more than 80 years, it is only fair to have an LSU-Bama rematch. LSU won in an extremely hard fought battle which could have gone either way---next time may be Alabama's turn. They are undoubtedly the 2 best teams in the US this year.

  • rwl - 12 years ago

Love it or hate it, it's the system the season began with. Until it is changed to a real tournament where you lose and go home it will always be this way. Besides, it's not about the game anymore it's about the money. Try telling the S. Miss players to take a fall so their conference will not lose out on a multi-million dollar BCS appearance. Really?

  • Van Savell - 12 years ago

Love SEC. Pulling for LSU. Hate rematches. In 1959 No. 1 LSU beat No. 3 Ole Miss 7-3. In rematch Ole Miss won in Sugar Bowl, 21-0. The BCS game should be LSU and Okla. State.

  • Logan - 12 years ago

It should be LSU OSU if OSU is on they would put more points on LSU then any other team LSU has played. No rematches you lost the first time why should you get a second chance?

  • Paul Roth - 12 years ago

This is silly.... How much interest can Two teams that just finished playing and limited to SEC conference generate. Bowl games should not only pit team against team BUT conference VS. conferense. Should be LSU vs Oklahoma State ......

  • Steve - 12 years ago

Alabama has their chance to beat LSU and failed. Let someone else try in the Bowl game. A rematch will prove nothing.

  • snw - 12 years ago

You lose at home, no way do you deserve a rematch. You missed field goals at HOME!!!
    Won't even turn it on

  • AJS - 12 years ago

(LSU won, 9-6, in overtime the first time around) -- a matchup that features an Alabama team that not only did not win its conference, but finished second (to LSU) in its division.
Meanwhile, the Cowboys -- the Big 12 champions whose only loss was in double-overtime to unranked Iowa State
AL lost in OT to #1; Cowboys lost in Double overtime to non ranked .500 team; this is about 2 best teams playing, that they happen to be from same conference so what; the reason they are not division champs is #1 team in country was-why should they be penalized like Georgia was in 2007? All the more reason to have a +1 playoff in Football

  • Leon - 12 years ago

There is no drama in this match-up. Most likely LSU will win and even if Alabama manages to win, it doesn't really prove anything since LSU was so much better all year long!
