Roy J. McDonald does not deserve the votes he is getting. I was close to casting my vote for him, too, when I realized that his nomination just does not live up to the Yglesias Award's standards. He switched from against gay marriage to for gay marriage, and in New York politics this does not constitute risking anything. Rather, it seems more like simple political expediency.

Winslow: funny you should mention the debt ceiling. Here's two very typical D. Frum posts on that:
Yes, he says the republicans were behaving badly, but always in passing. Same thing with his "critique" of Palin, etc. Always too little, too late.

You're wrong about Frum, oc. He's been outspoken in pushing the GOP to adopt positions on income inequality/declining social mobility, on the need for stimulus, on pollution taxes. He placed the blame over the debt ceiling debacle squarely with congressional Republicans. Did you not read his scathing critique of the current state of the GOP in New York Magazine (parts of which would make a better nomination for this award than his Iraq War mea culpa)?
I disagree with many of his ideas (particularly his views on Israel), but you can't claim that he lacks proposals for the present or that he fails the criticize the current state of his party.

Frum's comment was a mea culpa long after the fact. Too little, too late. Gov. Christie's remarks were laudable but really, a question about sharia law was a strawman just waiting to be knocked down. Sen. Macdonald is the only one whose principled vote and public remarks about that vote put his seat in jeopardy. He put skin in the game. That's worth a lot.
Governor Chris Christie's statement took guts, the rest, Bleh!

David Frum is no different from Captain Hindsight. He always has words of wisdom about what his party did wrong in the past but very little to say about the present (it's always the fault of the democrats, Obama etc). Definitely not deserving of this award.
