How should NFL punish James Harrison for Colt McCoy hit?

It was an obvious helmet to helmet hit, what used to be called spearing. He could have dropped his head and delivered a clean hit to the chest, but he chose to go in high. This guy has done that over and over again, and insists he's done nothing wrong. One game wasn't enough.

I say let the punishment fit the crime. Harrison should be subjected to helmet-to helmet blows until he too has a concussion. He is personally responsible for at least 3 concussions. He should get a dose of his own medicine.

Listen - I played football...And the rules are the rules... He has consistently went helmet to helmet with other players on numerous occasions. He is a repeat offender! Great Player, and I like his hard style of play. But, if you or I do anything as a repeat offender we lose more than just money. I love this sport, but to see a man crippled or hurt in that fashion is going to hurt no just players but the game itself.

And for those of you who may not like my response, ask JH one question, will he do it again??

If he says yes, then my case is closed.

Running backs aren't protected McCoy was running the ball. Good hit Harrison thanks for keeping football a contact sport!

James Harrison is one of the most intense defensive players on the field. Over the past year he has been villified due to a few unfortunate hits that (if we all can remember) prior to the updates to the NFL rules, would have ALL been considered GREAT defensive football and AMAZING HITS.... Unbelieveable INTENSITY! So, when CHUCKLE HEADS like "Chief" make statements like "suspend him for life" and "kick him out of pro football" it's just maddening to those of us who truly appreciate Good, HARD, Smashmouth STEELER football! You can dislike the Steelers, you can dislike an individual player.... But, when we let true VILLANS and former INMATES and MURDERERS (Plaxico Burress [his problems are just part of the reason the Steelers let him go], Mike Vick [it's UNBELIEVEABLE he's even back in the NFL] Ray Lewis [Yeah, OJ wasn't guilty either]) still participate in the NFL.... James Harrison is a Saint and nothing short of a PHENOMINAL FOOTBALL PLAYER with REAL HEART!

McCoy was outside the tackles and hash marks and had tucked the ball to run. He became a running back and saw Harrison advancing. He saw his opportunity to advance the ball by running diminish when the linebacker in coverage, Harrison, came to cover his zone. He then flipped the ball at the last instant to a receiver who became uncovered to try and get extra yards and extend the play. This play is identical to an option except he completed a forward pass instead of a lateral. Mcoy then dropped his pads to absorb the on coming blow. He was not stationary nor in the pocket. McCoy should have slid to avoid contact instead of trying to challenge an outside linebacker in the open field. McCoy needs to be coached to play like great game managers like Peyton Manning, throw the ball away and try again on the next play or series. Uneducated comments that play on emotion are useless.

    Leagal hit.

He was a runner that braced for the hit as Harrison lowered for the hit. As for perm. removal. Please! The league welcomes back felons and those who deliberately stomp on players.

I don't want to anyone get hurt, not ever. But when it become the professional Nation Flag League I'll stop watching.

    Best, and stay safe.

I say fine him and suspend him. If he does it again this season, kick him out of the league.

He led with the crown of his helmet and aimed for McCoy's head. That's not an open-field tackle; that's the sort of hit that causes severe head injuries. It's a rough game, but there are limits, and the players have a reasonable expectation of the types of hits that will be tolerated. We wouldn't allow repeated leg whips, chop blocks, clips, etc., so we certainly shouldn't tolerate repeated attempts to cause concussions. It's beyond unsportsmanlike conduct.

Any player that delivers an ILLEGAL hit that results in another player getting a concussion and being out for any period of time should be suspended until AT LEAST the player he hit returns to action. If McCoy misses the rest of the season - so should Harrison. He obviously hasn't learned from his prior mistakes.

Suspend for rest of year and play-offs. Yes it is football and it's tough, but over $100,000 fines and four other incidents?....Please he is dangerous.

Football is no longer a sport but a beauty contest. So what is the rule now for QB contact? Is it two hands above the waist?

  • razzle - 12 years ago

Look I love tough play as much as the next fan but these QB's are really in vunurable positions and Harrison doesn't put his head to the side and form tackle...he is a repeat offender of leading with the crown...the QB's are looking for check offs and receivers down field and are just getting blasted in the head...not cool and not fair...suspension for rest of regular season...the guy has to learn (if it's possible)

I voted to suspend him. My reasoning is this: Harrison knew he could hit McCoy fairly just by dropping his head a little and avoiding the helmet. He has been fined REPEATEDLY for similar offenses in the past yet does nothing to change his behavior. Regardless of whether or not you agree or disagree with the rule, he flagrantly disregards it. Colt McCoy should have been hit, he was on the run. He may even deserve a broken hand, but if you think James Harrison didn't mean to hit him helmet to helmet, you are a fool. How many times does he have to flagrantly put other players at risk like that for people to realize he plays recklessly on PURPOSE. Even one concussion could cause some serious damage for life and it is not a joke. Obviously accidents happen and football is a physical game but he is not out to just win the game, he goes for the kill because he is a violent person. Just look at his personal life for confirmation of that. He deserves the suspension. Also his punishment is not comparable to anybody else's because most other players punished for helmet to helmet hits (including Ray Lewis, even though I don't like him either) haven't repeatedly committed the same offense like he has. Obviously the fines aren't sending a message to James, so next step is putting him on the bench.

Suspend him for at least the end of the year and the playoffs. This is getting almost criminal with heavy repeat offenders such as him. Next time he does it, and you know he will, file assault charges.

  • Josh - 12 years ago

Its football, McCoy left the pocket and became a normal player when he tucked the ball to run. There was no intent to hurt him like in Suh or Seymours case. In fact its almost as much McCoys fault, hes the one that dropped his head after he released the ball otherwise he would've gotten it right in the pads. He got the call on the field and that should be enough, this fining and possible suspension deal has gotten out of hand.

  • Ted Gregory - 12 years ago

Prior repeated offenses undermine his credibility regarding this offense. Double the fine and suspend him for the next two years; lifetime suspension if a repeat offense after that.

  • NFL guy - 12 years ago

Repeat offender... double up on a fine and suspend him both!

  • james travis - 12 years ago

It's Pro football not powderpuff!!! Put your big boy pants on when u come to play or don't step on the field! Beside that it was unknown to harrison that he didn't still have the ball otherwise he never would have hit him....ban him for life paaaaalease!

  • Chief - 12 years ago

He got fined 4 times last year and he did not learn? Suspend him for life. Kick him out of pro-ball.
