It depends on the kid. I needed every ass whooping I got because I did shit like fight in school, cuss at a teacher, etc. My older sister didn't get as many whoopings as I did because all Mom had to do was look a certain way. More importantly, the way in parents teach their children will dictate whether or not physical punishment is appropriate.

Depends on the kid, I only got my ass whooped 3 times and I straightened out. Yes only three, but I will never forgot why I got those whoopings. My sister never had a whoopin and she is fine.
