I totally agree with the above comment. I'm a 21-year-old and although I loved the Hunger Games. It's not only the gore that bothers me though, but the themes the film contains - what the characters experience in terms of dealing with cruelty and politics is very real in some parts of the world - being from Zimbabwe, I can testify to this. I wouldn't recommend the books to an 8 year-old AT ALL. I'm also waiting to see how the movie will address these issues seeing as the rating is PG-13, when personally I would have expected it to be 16 at least...

I have read the Hunger Games and I am not letting my 9 year old read it. My 12 year old read it before me and loved it as much as I did. The subject is disturbing and it requires some maturity to separate it from reality since it is set in a some what realistic world. It is not a fantasy world like starwars or harry potter. I am concerned about the movie because it could be handled in different ways. I hope they focus on the social injustice and downplay the gore of the arena.
