I have been using elasticsearch for last 6 months in a production server with social media data (some 25-30 fields, 50000-100000 data, per index). As per my understanding, keeping indexes into multiple shards, and distributing the shards between nodes helps in faster results. Accordingly, I have been using two nodes in separate servers, that is 1 jvm per box.
