Racist and unacceptable in any context. Anyone in media using it deserves to be fired, not simply suspended.

This is a derogatory word, just the same as a certain word that would be used against another group of people (I hope you can figure this out).

I agree that this was probably not meant intentionally, but I don't know because I am not in someone else's head. Just because you have a family member of a certain race or ethnicity doesn't mean you get to say whatever you want or doesn't mean you can use that person as an excuse for it. If anything, I would agrue that his having an Asian wife should have made him more sensitive and more aware of the inappropriateness and offensive nature of his headline! These people are in the media and part of their job is to make sure each piece of information that is put out there is appropriate and not offensive.

Simon, you are insane. The same deragatory term that I am referring to earlier, can also be described as 'antiquated' and many people probably only know that slur because of rap music! Does that mean that it's ok or appropriate to start just using it? Do you think that would be an appropriate part of a headline, in whatever context?

I am Asian American and I am 32 years old. This word has been used towards me in a deragatory way. I am saying from my experience that this is offensive to me and is unacceptable as part of media.

Each of us makes decisions in our lives that have consequences.

I find it extremely hard to believe that the specific term used by ESPN in this context (twice) to be mere coincidence. They probably knew what the word meant, just like all of you, and most of your co-workers, probably knew of it before this incident.

It's also ridiculous for you to imply, without evidence, that few people know of the racist undertone of the word. I am a person in my twenties who knows what the word means, and so do my other friends in their twenties. The fact is that a lot of people do know about it (hence the backlash) and given that we are living in the information age, it is hard to think otherwise.

There are people living today who have had this word hurled at them, and if a person were to be racist to an Asian person, (s)he would most likely use this word. It's not a simple case of it being a "word from the 70's".

Will - You;re an idiot. And you good and well know that is not how the word was meant! This is a joke. People like you are so sensitive you are looking to be offended. Max Bretos is a staple for many of us Rugby and Soccer fans. Those of us who have followed him for ten years now know he is not a racist. His wife is Asian. The idea that all exoressions and words have to be checked by a bunch of pussies and PC Tought controllers is pathetic.

You guys are complete idiots to think they didnt overreact...Chink is a derogatory word and racist. Why would your company have any relation to that term?
