Yes, I think it's very important.

Not really. Students have plenty of opportunities to develop teamwork skills outside the classroom.

Obviously teamwork is great. But the teacher needs to know when the students are in a mood to get going, especially among the teenagers. Team work needs to be done with clear rubrics and instructions.
And again, there shouldn't be too many team activities- brings in a bit of 'clicks' in the classroom.
Starter activities don't count much though.
