If you asked me, you know I would say yes, it's time for a rule change on Idol.
Maybe they could change it so that only the Top 13 or 12 (whenever the single eliminations begin in the live shows) are ineligible to come back. Another possibility is to change it to Top 10, because those contestants get to go on tour.
I also think that on So You Think You Can Dance, there should be a rule change much like this one, so that only the Top 10 can’t come back instead of the Top 20. That seems reasonable.

It's harsh, but I think the no-coming-back rule sort of reins in the number of kids getting through. When they only have one shot, they, and the judges, might be more mindful of letting them into the top 24 (ahead of someone more mature) and flaming out next round anyway.
