Will the Yankees get under the $189MM luxury tax threshold by 2014?

This won't happen. The Yankees hate the "revenue sharing" in baseball (also known as welfare). Unfortunately teams like the Yanks set the luxury tax limit - their payroll lowers, so does the luxury tax.

With 75 million already tied into 3 players it's going to be very difficult, if they want to keep Cano and Granderson. They have a very high revenue stream, if they let either of them go to meet the cap they would be crazy.

There's too much money at stake here, even for the Yankees. MLB is clearly putting pressure on them to get their spending closer to the next highest spending team. They made a move to bring in a young, cost controlled pitcher with the Pineda trade and have plenty of young arms in their system, potentially reducing their need to sign a big Free Agent pitcher like Hamels or trading for a big name. While it's unlikely they'll be able to keep all of Swisher (FA after this season), Granderson & Cano (FAs after '13), they'll be as creative as necessary to get under $189 Million for the '14 season.

If George was still alive this wouldn't happen, and Albert Pujols would be in pinstripes too. Just sayin

I love these poll's. Currently there are 2,726 yankee fans voting and 6,812 fans of other teams voting...

I agree that it would be smart... but it's not possible without making concessions on your players. Grandy and Cano hit free agency in the same year, and while I'm sure they'd prefer to stick, both will command a minimum $20M/year salary. We're talking about two annual MVP contenders, one of whom is represented by Scott Boras. If Boras can get Prince Fielder 9 years and $214M from the Detroit Tigers, then just imagine what he'll get for Robinson Cano from the New York Yankees, who'd be insane to let the best all-around second baseman in MLB walk. If the Yankees want to get below the tax threshold, my guess is they let Granderson walk, in which case they better start investing in young outfielders now because he's impossible to replace in free agency. Fortunately for the Yankees (unfortunate for everyone else) they have a pretty deep core of cheap starting pitching and Sabathia locked up already. However, Brett Jackson and Michael Pineda will be looking for extensions within a couple years and there's still the bench and bullpen to consider... The Yankees have put themselves in a position where they might not be able to maintain the top tier of talent they command while staying under the tax threshhold.

Life is hard when you are filthy, filthy rich.

I'd say yes, the yankees will be below the $189 million dollar mark by 2014, because Hal Steinbrenner seems like a man that gets what he wants. Just as his father was. Also wasting money on a luxury tax that helps your competition is not good business in any sense. And seeing how there are only 3 players under contract thru 2014, it gives the yankees plenty of time to put into effect there new playroll plans, which they seem to have already employed up to this point. So, so long the days of huge blown up contracts bestowed upon players on the other side of 30. Which I think is good this team and baseball as a whole. Seeing how it was the yankees that created this problem in the first place.
