If schools add new music offerings like guitar, songwriting & digital recording, what will happen to traditional ensembles like band, choir & orchestra?
They will continue to thrive, unaffected by other offerings. New offerings will attract students not in band, choir, or orchestra, and will not draw away those in the traditional ensembles.
They will remain strong, even enhanced by new offerings. Students who get exposed to school music through new offerings may join traditional ensembles to continue involvement.
They will suffer, to the detriment of music education. Students who would have done band, choir, or orchestra will be lost to newer offerings, which can't provide the same quality experience.
They may lose enrollment to new offerings, but that is okay. The new offerings may better serve the needs of today's teens with their greater creative and expressive potential.
