I chose the Saab Gripen because for the same price as a modest fleet of the other aircraft, you could have an armada of Gripens.

Su-30 which has got TVC(Thrust vectoring nozzles) and which can do cobra manoeuvres booted only 14% votes. It has an edge in BVR and WVR operations as well.

This poll may have been skewed..

Best 4.5 fighters in terms of design or ACTUAL COMBAT USE? Sure the Saab Gripen,Su 30, and Rafale have built in capabilities that rival and some cases, may pass US fighters like the F-16,F-18E, and older F-15s, BUT( and I know many here dont want to accept it)
How will they perform in the real world???!

The big difference is actuall combat performance and the ability of the Country using the platform to maintain it.

What many simply will not accept is that for many years, the US has been the military juggernaut of the world, and can literally impose its will almost anywhere
    It wants!

Gripens probably can knock opposing Superhornets out of the sky,BUT for how long???! When you have a US Navy fleet off your coast and you are a smaller nation, those "mediocre" F-18s, flown be WELL trained and capable pilots are going to wear your home forces down to zero. Before that? Most likely after your air defense and EW systems have been bombed or taken out by cruise missiles, F-22 raptors will have mauled or neutralized a significant amount of your early responding air fleet. And if the US decides using Raptors is too expensive, F-15s will do what they have been doing for more than 30yrs- killing opposing combat acft. This will be followed on by the still very capable F -16s( Fighters designed to defeat everything from old but capable mig 21s to mirages to mig 29s) even upgraded Falcons can tangle with gripens, typhoons, and rafales.

Many nations are about national pride too! Why buy overseas when you can build at home something just as good? The US simply does not buy foreign weapons as some of our own allies may balk at seeing their national product used offensively .Ditto nations like France, who also do not want embargo
On equipment if the foreign producers do not like french political policy.

Gentlemen, each fighter is good enough for the nation it. You cannot judge combat performance based on "mock air battles" with LIMITED rules of engagement, o

Super hornet in not a fighter, it´s a medium wight strike aircraft and lack the capabilities of the other airplanes. Rafale and Gripen is revolutionary designs with enhanced capabilities due to close coupled canard and delta wing. Rafale is bigger, have less acceleration in transonic speeds and smaller radar. Gripen is smaller(better for a fighter), have the highest instantaneous turn rate, shortest turnaround, are ideal for close air support, big AESA that can look backward, smallest visibility in all spectra, GN EW- suite(uniqu and revulutionary), long range, high availability, small logistic footprint, the only fighter that can operate from rugged road bases in all weathers and have the most developed and unjammeble real time tactical datalink in combination with link 16. It can now even be fitted with CARABAS, which is a foliage penetrating radar. The ground penetrating radar SCARAB will probably be fitted later.
The Gripen E is the best fighter and excellent in all other types of missions without the need of switching a button. It will enter service 2018. The Gripen C will be upgraded to close E`s capabilities.
No question If i was a general i war, the obvious choice would be the Gripen. Even if money was not a question. Only The Rafale and F-15 can take substantially more weapons load than the Gripen, but tat´s only relevant if they are used as bomb trucks.

This poll is skewed, everyone knows that Americans are the biggest flag wavers in the world, meaning that it's a forgone conclusion they will ALWAYS vote their planes as the best. I've been to a Moscow airshow, the Russians have some pretty badass planes.

The Su-35 is the best 4++ generation fighter. The f-15 se isn't really a 4++ generation fighter but rather an 5 generation one, the aircraft has been improved the airframe has been redesigned so that it can deflect radar radiation and it also incorporates a lot of 5 generation systems (such us its radar, and its protection systems). However, from the candidates on the list the f-15 se is the best both on bvr and on close range combat.

but mig-35 and the rafale could be the best either.ı can't compare eurofighter typhoon, rafale, and mig 35 without any combat proof but i thing f-15se is superior to them.

  • sarp - 12 years ago

i voted for f-15se cause its not a f-15 or a f-15e.ıts has stealh capacitys as well as many advanced futures over 4th generation fighter aircraft.but the second comes after from f-15se should be eurofighter typhoon cause it has lower radar-cross section.how can they voted for the f-18 super hornet!it has a maximum speed of just 1.8 mach!and by the way im 15 years old from turkey :D

  • kalaiselvan - 12 years ago

j10 are 4th generation fighters. But if you asked me for 4.5 fighters i will choose rafale and su30mki. I dont know how peoples are selecting f 15,16 or f 18 those are obsolete when you compare that with others. Typhoon is also good but you cannot expect all the advanced in that because of that europeans shaking economy and also they are going invest for f 35 also. So i dont know how much they are going to spend for its advancements. But for chinese aircraft i will say only one thing that is they will inducted jf 17 and they will rename it as f 22a raptor.

In my opinion, the Russian Su-35 and the aforementioned MiG-35 are 4.5 gen fighters because they have thrust vectoring to them along with advanced sensors and weapon systems. The F-22 should have been cancelled when the Cold-War ended. I just wished the US Navy would have kept the F-14 Tomcat and continually update it.

    Musson,

    It's called the F-22...

  • JohnKyr - 12 years ago

Really? F18 & F15... 4,5 Gen? And they got the majority of the votes? Really? Are we talking about which we consider the best, or we are just voting our countrys fighters against the others?

Some common sense please... even through modernisations, F-18 and F-15 are 30+ years old designs...

My vote goes straight to Rafale... an excellent aircraft, real multirole capabilities and a complete set of weapons. Unfortunately the French cannot promote the aircraft and thats a pitty...

  • Musson - 12 years ago

1% other? I guess some guys will always vote for the p-51 Mustang - no matter what!
