Going to the playoffs is a valuable experience. Plus, historically the Silvertips have not done poorly with their First Round Bantam Picks that were later-picked than-non-playoff-teams:
2004: Eric Doyle, 15th Overall Pick
2005: Kyle Beach, 10th Overall Pick
2006: Kellan Tochkin, 13th Overall Pick
2007: Kent Simpson, 22nd Overall Pick
2008: Ryan Murray, 9th Overall Pick
2009: Nicholas Walters, 8th Overall Pick & Seth Jones, 11th Overall Pick
2010: None.
2011: Ty Mappin, 7th Overall Pick
With the exception of Seth Jones (who has never played for Everett but still might in the future), and 2010 (when no First Round picks were made by Everett), these players were all contributors for the Silvertips franchise. With good scouting and good coaching, this trend should continue in the future.
I would much rather a team battles in the second-half of a season to make the playoffs, like the Silvertips did, and get swept, than to tank the season and hope for a high pick while at the same time developing a losing mentality. I strongly believe many of the players who were a part of this season's team, who will be trying to be a part of this team next season, will come back to Everett stronger, more experienced, and more motivated. That is a good thing.
