Which team made the better deal Monday, the Reds or Giants?

Reds got Votto locked up long term for market dollars - this is one of baseball's premiere hitters with OPS in career stratosphere - .900+ career hitters are rarities and Votto also plays 1st - a position that is easier on the body than say CF or SS, plus Votto has a better body type than a Prince or Howard and should age better. He is just entering his prime years right now and should get even better the next four or five years and still provide top production well into the last years of his contract. Another not insignificant factor is the fan effect- this is a small market team making a big statement to its fans - "We want to keep a couple of our top young guns and not just be a constant prospect machine" - a trap that some small teams fall into (see Pirates, Royals et al). I like the Cain deal but the Reds deal is huge for the impact it has for that franchise in more ways than just the stat sheet.

Votto is a every day player. The other is 1 in four days. Look at his record he lost 11 Game.
He is a good Picher but Votto is a good every day player. He drives in runs that helped the pichers to win.

Cain however is just entering his prime, pitches half his games in a pitchers ballpark, and the Giants only locked him up for 6 years so if things go south they can dump him, but the chances of that are slim, Giants got the better deal hands down.

The Reds will be regretting this when he is 38 and falling apart while getting paid 30 million dollars a year, but let them enjoy his prime while it lasts, Pujols' deal is justifiable to me but I don't think Votto is worth 225 million dollars

Less effective on the road? Do you bother using actual stats or is your perception good enough for you? Votto has an OPS 60 points higher on the road for his career. 35 points higher in average and a marginal 7 less homers over more than 600 games. Not saying that the Giants didn't get the better deals but when it comes to statistics, the right answer doesn't justify a bad process.

Cain has great stuff . He's a workhorse growing into his role and maturing. He knows how to pitch in every park now and will get better with age. Votto is a great player but that " bandbox " he plays in makes him less effective on the road. He'd hit " a ton " to centerfield in the West's parks. Advantage: Cain and the Giants
