The poll omits the answer I'd choose: "Give them a break, they're doing OK."

Amazon.com's engagement with the University of Washington has been a huge benefit. People like Werner Vogels and James Hamilton speak in classes, give public lectures, etc. People like Deepak Singh and Steve Halliwell work with our faculty and students to help them get understand the ins and outs of doing science in the cloud. Jeff Bezos makes technical visits periodically; most recently last month, before that in December. As noted in the first installment of the Seattle Times hatchet job, Amazon committed two $1 million Endowed Professorships to give us an edge in recruiting two superb machine learning candidates over very stiff competition; getting this commitment took 48 hours from "first request" to "done deal."

I could go on and on. Cut them some slack. Everyone can always do better; everyone always wants more; but those articles were hugely negatively biased.
