7-Game Suspension For Metta World Peace, too much, just right or not enough?

I recommend that all posters who have a problem with the punishment Mr. Artest got WATCH HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE BASKETBALL! They should also organize a FAN BOYCOTT OF THE NBA EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY! Commissioner Stern IS THE MOST INEFFECTIVE COMMISSIONER IN THE HISTORY OF
PROFESSIONAL BASKETBALL. THAT IS WHY FANS SHOULD BOYCOTT THE NBA
AND ALL SNEAKER MANUFACTURERS IN THE UNITED STATES IN ORDER TO TELL THE NBA THAT IT NEEDS REGULATIONS WITH TEETH IN THEM TO STOP THE HOOLIGANISM IN THE NBA!

  • Peter M. Arel - 12 years ago

Accident my foot! What was Mr. Artest doing celebrating on the basketball court?! If the NBA DOESN'T ALREADY HAVE A RULE BANNING SUCH CELEBRATIONS IT
OUGHT TO! Such actions say that Mr. Artest is a "ME" player and the NBA SHOULD BE BOYCOTTED BY EVERY BASKETBALL FAN WHO IS SICKENED BY MR. ARTEST'S ACTIONS ON THE BASKETBALL COURT-PAST & PRESENT!

  • Peter M. Arel - 12 years ago

Well said, John. I believe the game was invented by Dr. James Naismith. Check out Bill Cosby's comic monologue on "THE INVENTION OF BASKETBALL." Yes, we had militant people back then. But I agree with you Mr. Artest SHOULD be done for
the year. A FAN BOYCOTT, if you have the stomach for it, is what is needed here;NOT ONLY OF THE NBA BUT OF EVERY SINGLE SNEAKER COMPANY ON THE PLANET(OR AT LEAST HERE IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA)! Watching high school and college basketball is also recommended. At least THEIR PLAYERS DO NOT GET AWAY WITH SUCH CHEAP SHOTS!

  • Peter M. Arel - 12 years ago

IT'S DEFINITELY TIME FOR A CHANGING OF THE GUARD(AND NOT AT BUCKINGHAM PALACE EITHER BUT IN THE NBA LEAGUE OFFICES IN NEW YORK CITY)! AND THE COMMISSIONER SHOULD BE THE FIRST ONE TO GO
FOR HIS STUPID AND INEFFECTIVE PENALTY THAT HE HANDED DOWN
TO THE MAN WHO CALLS HIMSELF "METTA WORLD PEACE"! WHAT AN ASININE NICKNAME AND WHAT A MOCKERY THE BEARER OF THAT NICKNAME
IS MAKING OF THAT NAME! NO PARENT IN HIS RIGHT MIND IS GOING TO LET HIS KID EMULATE "METTA WORLD PEACE" NOW!GET RID OF MR> ARTEST ONCE AND FOR ALL!!!

  • Peter M. Arel - 12 years ago

I WOULD NOT WANT TO BE A TEAMMATE OF ARTEST'S OR AN OPPONENT OF HIS EITHER! THE PENALTY HANDED DOWN WAS DEFINITELY LIGHTWEIGHT! TAKING AWAY MR. ARTEST'S RIGHT TO MAKE A LIVING IS NO
MORE AND NO LESS THAN HE DESERVES!The problem will be how to punish Mr. Artest so that he NEVER elbows ANYBODY ELSE EVER AGAIN! A fan BOYCOTT of the NBA(post-lockout) citing the ineffective leadership of the NBA front office and the COMMISSIONER'S MISHANDLING OF THE ENTIRE AFFAIR WOULD A GOOD PLACE TO START!

  • ARMYVET - 12 years ago

    Dillon,
What have u been smoking, I want some of that.
Or are u a denfense lawyer using the familiar tactic of blaming the victim as in a rape case.
Wake up and realize this sub-human feces is criminally insane and need a lot of help.

  • dillon - 12 years ago

Harden got it coming. He always does these stupid celebrations when he hits a three and trys to get in peoples face. He deserved to get beat more than just an elbow. Harden should be banned not artest. He's so immature and think he and his team is superior to everyone esle.

  • John - 12 years ago

Stern are you reading this CRAP.. Or will this happen again.. I say it happens again. NBA keeps thinking it will fix itself. Stern your people assigning punishment are tired. Change them now. You will regret this if it occurs again by Artest. He is giving you a clear sign that he's not done yet. He is no different then any other bad person on the street. Duh

  • Miguel M - 12 years ago

    1. The foul was bad and he definitely deserved a bigger punishment than 7 games
    2. But not for life like most you other "real" fans believe. Metta has cleaned up his act in the past 2-3 years

  • John - 12 years ago

I do not believe Harden was called for a foul. So with that said. I don't think I can support World Meta Violence's behavior. I am stunned at what many of the news reporters were suggesting. They all suggested 3-5 games. They played well together with the NBA so the NBA could look like the tough guy. The human Race is hollering for suspension for the remainder of the year. Go figure it out.

    GO watch the movie Bullies

  • John - 12 years ago

Thanks for the feedback. This guy should be done for the year. The NBA Commissioner has failed. As much as I love this sport and like Stern. The sport is not invented by Stern. He continues to fail by NOT putting the hammer down. Children will imitate this behavior. This will be on the Stern or lack of Stern leadership. Suspension for the remainder of the season should have been the minimum.. Seems to be liberal attitudes in the NBA office . If they need a real man to dole out punishment to knuckleheads have him contact me.

Remember the referees. That screwed up several years of basketball for a lot of people. They failed to see what everyone was watching. For years he would not listen to the fans. The refs were running the games with side bets for money. Trust me there was more guilty then what was investigated.

  • Mel - 12 years ago

This mentally sick creature shouldn't be allowed again to any NBA field. His previous life is a proof of this. Only 7 game? I think that this ill-balanced creature has to go in front of the court. Well do this on the street to someone and then see what happens to you. If you tell the police "Oh! I didn't see him." you think he will listen to you? If such little punishments contiune in NBA they will lose the NBA fans including me. Go to a mental hospital Metta Wordld-WAR!

  • Yusuf - 12 years ago

    1. With this punishment, NBA declared that sportsmanship has no value compared to fanaticism (You made the Lakers Fanatics happy, NOT the real NBA fans).

    2. I think this unfortunate event should also be judged in a regular court by the professional psychologists.

    3. Without any psychological clearance, he should not be allowed to the basketball court.

    4. With this decision, NBA commissioner should be hold responsible if this guy seriously hurt someone or kill someone in the future NBA game.

  • nbaintergityisgone - 12 years ago

I am just about fed up with the NBA. The integrity of the game is long gone and its not fun
to watch especially with the rediculious decisions made by the commisioner for vilolent acts.
There is a negative picture painted and message sent to the kids who look up to these sports
players. Its just not the same. Commisioner I think maybe you need to pray on these decisions
and maybe next time you will open your eyes......................

  • Gil - 12 years ago

Just wondering why Harden ran up on Artest impeding his transition up the court. This was an over reaction by Artest but it could have all been avoided if Harden did not interfere with Artest as was trying to get back on defense. Because of the elbow connection Harden is getting the full victim treatment, but it looked like Harden was willing and intended to impede and interfere with Artest's. Now other players may have stopped, put their hands up, until the ref said, "let him go Harden". C'mon this is Artest, Harden was trying to get under his skin, tried to get him stirred up, Just to bad that Artest is next level overreactor...

  • joe - 12 years ago

I want to know why the police did not arrest world peace for aggravated assualt? Harden should sue this criminal.

  • Asia - 12 years ago

MWP intend to hit Harden, but he didn't know it was right on H's neck. If it happened on street, MWP might end up in jail instead of sitting on sideline with tux and enjoy the AC ....

  • pfff - 12 years ago

it was on purpose, harden was going to bump shouldiers with him you can tell the way he was walking into mwp, he elbowed it to not start anything and make it quick and simple, end of story.

  • Søren - 12 years ago

This is not about Griffin or Wade. This is about an offender who has made over-the-edge fouls repeatedly.

Ron Artest (Wont call him "World Peace", as that's just perverted by now) was indeed celebrating a great dunk on a top scoring MVP candidate and a top defending player. Of course he should celebrate that - it was great!
On his way back to the defensive end James Harden got in the way - either he tried to take a little off Artest's celebration, or he saw it as the only way to avoid getting run down, and leaned towards Artest to let him know he was about to run into him. No matter the case, Artest suddenly raised his elbow upwards, and swung with significantly more force towards Harden's head than the previous pounding on his own chest.
It screamed: "Get the fuck off me!"

Artest claims it was an accident. How would you react if you accidently hit someone like that?
    Would you
    a) Not be surprised and keep running back, continuously pounding your chest and celebrate.
    b) Be surprised that you hit something, turn around and look and notice a man on the floor, and perhaps help him.

There is no way Artest could not have known what happened. He did not show surprise nor remorse which clearly - in addition to the actual move - proves his intent to harm Harden.

Artest had a great game in a good streak of games, so why this? He hurts himself, The Lakers and other players - and it seems that he wont change.

I've never respected him much despite him being a good basketball player, and his act was selfish, cowardly and downright vicious. Seeing this is not the first offense of this caliber, I find that 7 games is not enough to sit out. It sends a signal, as previously stated, that you can just hard-foul key players and get away with it relatively cheap. Artest's quarantine of 7 games should start when Harden is cleared for his concussion and ready to return. At best.

If I had any say I would not let Artest play in the league ever again. He's a potential danger to players on the floor, and that simply has no place in a national league.

NBA - it's time to take of the silk gloves. Make an example of Artest and show everyone that you do not accept violence (and essentially breaking the law).

  • Angry baller - 12 years ago

I can't understand that so many punks who don't even watch the game can talk about what happened without having seen the whole fucking thing : it's an accidental hit, MWP don't even know he hit Harden in the face, and apologized, now if we wanna punish every fucking accidental hit, let s fire Ibaka for his fingers in Kobe's eyes, let's say 2 games, Lebron for his knee on John Lucas head, 10 games, and I can go on and on and on but i ain't gonna waste my time with some crazy ass bitches who talk about a sport they probably never played since a cople of years.

  • Common Sense - 12 years ago

Bottom-Line: He wound up and maliciously hit Harden, then he lied about it, then he apologized about it. If Stern is going to continue to allow this to happen then they might as well start telling expendable guys on teams to take out the Scorers or whoever they want to take out on the opposing teams and just lose 7 games.

    Artest: Fail.
    Stern: Fail.
    NBA: Fail.
Laker Fans who cheered Artest especially those who gave him a Standing Ovation:

    EPIC FAIL.

Way to show a total lack of Class Everybody

  • Artest for Prez - 12 years ago

Artest was celebrating his monster dunk i dont understand why Harden ran up to him and tried to stop him from running back the other way? To me it was a provoked on Hardens part. Nobody deserves to get elbowed in the head like that but Harden looked as if he was trying to stop Artest from celebrating by shoving him and yes it is true Blake Griffin can easily hurt people when he slams his elbows into peoples faces and dunks on them (Pau Gasol) and a foul isnt even called or when Dwayne Wade fouled KB24 so hard in the ALLSTAR game he gave him a bloody nose plus a concussion. Why werent these two players suspended? Dwayne and Griffin are dirty players is it because they are the NBA prima Donnas and just because Artest has the bad boy label on him he gets unfairly reprimanded. Seven games is way too much. Three games would have been fine but seven is harsh. The Lakers try and get Blake Griffin on that dirty foul on Pau Gasol when he elbowed him in the face before he dunked it and Stern says its not a foul when it clearly was a flagrant foul and now this harsh suspension on Artest. David Stern has some kind of beef with the Los Angeles Lakers or something and dont even get me started on that whole Chris Paul trade where he blocked the trade to the Lakers like three times but ended up allowing him to get traded to the LA Slippers and then making the excuse that it would have given the Lakers an unfair adavantage????? That was a bunch of BS. All i can say is David Stern Im a Laker fan im an NBA fan but i cannot stand you and i wish you were not the commisioner of the NBA because you obviously do not like the LA Lakers there have been to many dealings this past year with the Lakers and they have all been negative. You suck!!!!!

  • Devin - 12 years ago

Who celebrates with throwing an elbow with that motion? And how can a player dont realize he made contact with his elbow to another with that force? And decides to do a fighting stance with Ibaka after it happened. 10 games would have been fitting, option A is basically Laker fan votes. I never liked Artest since with Indiana, too bad his name is tagged with lakers.

  • j_will_khadz - 12 years ago

lets be fair in our judgement... we will not judge of the pass but rather the present... if he(metta) did not change, why the NBA gave him the Citizenship award last season... let be fair...

  • Michael - 12 years ago

I think the guy is either studid or sick, maybe both. Alone calling himself MWP speaks for itself (is he trying to erase his violent tendencies by changing his name or something?) Anyway, he was completly out of control. If he was 3 years old it would be comprehensible but he's an NBA player, 6-7 tall, an adult who, in his past, tried to beat up a fan in the stands(!). If he had hit Harden in the face or throat, it could have caused serious injury.
Artest should undergo psychological treatment instead of changing his name, and after that coming back to the NBA. Ohterwise it's just like Magic said- It's a shame...and a threat to his opponents.

  • Pete - 12 years ago

Lets just send out the 11th or 12th man on the team to "accidentaly" elbow the opponents best players. Uhh 5 game suspension? 10? Who cares? You might win a playoff series that way though.

  • ArmyVet - 12 years ago

This Douchebag should be banished from NBA. Wait, on second thought, traded to Charlotte. Let's start a poll guys.

  • Shamar - 12 years ago

Ok people listen.. I can see all the laker fans on this post saying all this stuff about other players (blah blah blah).. but the fact of the matter is they aren't already repeat offenders! That's the main point! I mean open your eyes people.1. Artest is already wealthy enough not to care about 7 games without pay. 2. Need you be reminded that he has already been suspended (13 times) more than Rasheed Wallace, who got tossed one game just for looking at the official. 3. The smack across the face to J.J last year and now this(Need I mention the Palace?). These aren't in any way basketball plays guys. C'mon and open those eyes!! There is no room for any of this in basketball PERIOD! Not to mention there isn't any money coming out of his own pocket for fines, just 7 games without pay? Get outta here with that! Not to mention, the guy isn't even sorry for what happened. He tweeted something like " Oh man just watch the replay, i guess my celebration was a bit much, this looks bad". Are you kidding me? Where is the oh shizz I f'd up, im sorry. I mean isn't that what real men do?
Dude needs to be banned from the playoff's and finals. Next year's name: Ron Artrash

  • Mawi - 12 years ago

Ron Artest's action is a criminal offense that does not belong onto the basketball court and he has shown over and over that he (unlike his ridiculous name) will not change.
A seven game suspension? Really??? What message is the NBA sending to the millions of kids around the globe that watch their games every day? That they are able to continuously break the rules without serious punishment.
I am sick of the NBA and their overpaid, violent and whining players, first and foremost, Ron Artest... or whatever he likes to call himself these days.
If he's "Metta World Peace", I don't want to meet "Metta World War". Ban Ron Artest from further ruining this once beautiful sport.

  • Marcus - 12 years ago

First of all it was clearly intentional and it was not in the middle of a play so he doesn't even have that excuse. If I were to run by someone and elbow them in the back of a head and give them a concussion not only would I lose my job but probably end up in jail for assault, anyone would be lucky to just get sent home from work for 7 days. The fact that it was borderline criminal and he gets docked a few days of pay simply encourages this type since he has done this type of thing numerous times and so have other players it clearly does not make them think twice. Im sure if anyone only got a few days worth of pay withheld and didnt have to work for a few days we would all start a few more fights at work!

  • Ludovic - 12 years ago

Metta WAR Peace should be banned from the league FOREVER. This guy is just a crazy sick !
He is just unpredictible, and could do that again. He's got serious mental troubles.
Did you see the play? A lick that vicious, if randomly hit to a Kevin Durant or another superstar, could damage a championship team for several months. Sorry guys, this is NOT basket-ball.

  • theSpurs - 12 years ago

These guys make millions of dollars! To even mention that the 7 game suspension without pay is meaningless. Ban this guy before theres blood on the court!

  • Colt45 - 12 years ago

    Brilliant,
If someone elbow you so hard to give you a concussion when you are standing in line at a bank or market, I wonder what you would be saying. I am willing to bet you would be singing a different tune.
Please do not point finger at other players such as Wade, Griffith, Bown or Hardin. What they may or may not have done is completely immaterial and in no way lessen the despicable behavior of Artest.

From a Moron with a PHD in Pharmacology

  • brilliant - 12 years ago

Even though I don't condone this type of behavior, MWP should not be suspended for 7 games. ESPECIALLY if its playoffs.

Because of his rap sheet, I can understand why he's being treated more harsh than other NBA players (DWade, Griffin, etc) Bruce Bowen even had the nerve to say he deserved more than 10 games suspension because it was a dirty play. REALLY BRUCE? You've purposely injured players on more than 1 occasion.

People who are saying that he should be in a mental institution / prison, you're all morons. Elbow to the head? Really? We've all seen much much worse. Many of you probably HAVE DONE much worse.

We all seem to forget how much of a dirty player James Harden is. HE does this sh!t every single game. Getting into another players face/proximity. Talking sh!t in people's ear. I'M NOT SAYING HE DESERVED AN ELBOW TO THE HEAD, but I'm just glad someone shut him up. Lets be honest, he had this coming.

  • Henry - 12 years ago

Cheap shot artist D Wade can concuss AND break Kobes nose and NOTHING!!!!
There's no equity rhyme or reason to NBA penalties.

  • cgoll - 12 years ago

First of all james harden always talks crap on the floor he is one of the dirtiest players... secondly he was cleared to play and was walking out the coaches stopped whispered in his ear next thing you know he is walking back to the lockeroom OKC new what they were doing..if he played no suspension or a small one at that..they played the cards...can u say bs..thanks stern...thanks okc..karma will catch up to u in the playoffs

  • Malik - 12 years ago

writers y'all happy now? Blake Griffin goes about elbowing people in the face and stare down at them all the time, Ba I guess the commissioner and Stu Jackson and oh, the refs never see that. dont get me wrong what this guy did was not right, ba harden should've moved out of the way and quit talking trash to people like Ron Artest. Whom we're all aware of his visits to the psychiatric. It tells you there's or was something wrong with the guy who has however managed to control himself in the past few years. Why do people always need bring back the stuff from the PALACE. that Stuff is passed now Mr. Commissioner and so is your time. And Sekou Smith, if you read this get over it man, and get some sleep and think about a new article rather writing about this guy every hour. he made a mistake, a biiiiiig one, ba he should also be forgiving.

  • Colt45 - 12 years ago

Jeremy, I couldn't agree with you more. Apparently there are different justice for us common folks and celebrities even thugs like Ron ARREST. Changing his name to world peace is like Hitler calling himself
    Rabbi Einstein.

  • Aleks - 12 years ago

give or take a few games this is reasonable punishment. but, than, I do not understand that Griffin elbowing Gasol on the last dunk was not even an offensive foul! although Griffin's elbow had less damage on the victim, it was done with more intention than MWP's one.

  • Cat - 12 years ago

This guy should be kicked out of the NBA... he's a disgrace to the term "World Peace" and the game of basketball, which he has made millions off of, while remaining the park hoodlum he started out as.

  • Jeremy - 12 years ago

What does law enforcement do with repeat offenders?... Give stiffer penalties with each reoccuring offense! The brawl at the Palace should have been a clear indication of what an idiot Ron (MWP) is. If i went to the store and threw an elbow to a random stranger, i bet 10 times out of 10 I would be facing assult charges and be locked up. Why isn't this idiot treated the same as you and I? 7 games is a slap in the face to the NBA and all its fans! Banned from the league, and from society, is more fitting....

  • dhel - 12 years ago

Joshua did you say Harden should have move out of the way? GTFOH! It doesn't matter if it's play-offs or not, the guy INTENDED to hurt Harden period! The video shows it all! He should have been banned from playing coz this didn't happen just once or twice, don't you guys know how dangerous it is to get hit on the head like that?

  • NBA Fan - 12 years ago

Eddy - One every 4 years?

Are you smoking? Did you forget last year Dallas sweeping Lakers and after a Barea lay-up, Ron Artest (I REFUSE to call him something he isn't nor he represents in ANY kind of way) clotheslined Barea's face and he got ejected?

Does these Lakers's fans easily forget and erase their memories?

Artest has been on way too many fights in NBA. Just go to youtube and type "Ron Artest Fights"

    The results speak for themselves.

    Get real Laker fans.

  • Colt45 - 12 years ago

Only 7 games? This piece of sh/t should be prosecuted by DA for assault and locked up in a mental institution for life. Whatever happened to 3 strikes? This nutcase has 13 suspensions. Please take him
Off the court before he injures someone else!

  • Jeff - 12 years ago

For all the people that say that James Harden should have move out of the way you are wrong. If you see Ron artest record of all the stupid things he did and the fights he did, he should have move out of the way. People don't celebrate like that especially throwing elbows. If you say James Harden is a baby and he is over reacting you are wrong because Ron only got 7 game suspension and you are the ones complaining that it is too much games.

  • Peter - 12 years ago

This is an obviously skewed poll. You should take off the qualifier "The punishment [...] might be a little generous" in the second option. It forces someone who thinks that the punishment was just right to agree that it might have been a little generous. Also, more than half of the people (~52% - option A + B) think that the punishment was not too light. All you Artest haters who jump out on your high horses after one play should just get over it.

Oh and if you want to talk about intentionally hurting someone, rewatch the play where KD tries to poke out Kobe's eye after Kobe accidentally hit him on the previous play. That's intentional but I don't hear you griping about KD's character.

  • RAFTIFIED - 12 years ago

NOT ENOUGH!It should have been at least the rest of the season,im not exaggerated, the MWP has a history of dirty tactics, trouble maker,He stupid!I just dont understand why he had to change his name,World Peace when he's always the one initiating troubles..,c'mon!

  • BigCitySid - 12 years ago

"He should be banned from playing ever again in the league." Dimi. Talk about over reaction...or maybe this Dimi is related to Harden. Her statement is to emotionally to even be considered serious. Dimi, switch to women's tennis.

The Commish got it right. 7 games, especially 6 in the postseason, is a very serious penalty. And if the series goes as plans, MWP will have to play in OKC. Trust me, it would have been more merciful for him to skip that trip than to face those fans. Watch & see.

  • Mike - 12 years ago

Ron you can change your name but youll newer change that ur shit person. Shame on you stupid bastard

  • Billy - 12 years ago

He should have just got suspened for the rest of the playoffs period! MWP is a knuckle head, seems to be as immature as Bynum. why the name change? shouldnt he be promoting world peace? yet hes out there voilently acting defensles players, what a role model. All the folks on here saying its too much or Harden is acting like a child, you stand and have someone give you a full on elbow right in your dome and sit though concussion because youre all champs.

  • Corey - 12 years ago

This is shit! He should've gotten and 10+ game suspension, 7 games is nothing!

  • BigCitySid - 12 years ago

7 games is just right, the Commish did the correct thing.

  • joshua j. - 12 years ago

I completely understand the NBA commissioner's, as well as the decision from the NBA on suspending Metta World Peace aka Ron Artest. However, 7 games are way too overboard, it should have been no more than 5 games. Besides, these are the playoffs we're talking about. James Harden should had moved out of the way!!!

  • Kevin - 12 years ago

More than 7 games? Whatever. Quit crying losers!!!!!

  • Dimi - 12 years ago

He should be banned from playing ever again in the league. It is unacceptable that the NBA gave him only 7 games suspension; in my eyes this is rewarding this type of behavior. Without pay... Really? as if he cares with all the millions he is making. NBA does not need such idiots; there are enough great players around and he definitely is not one of them.

  • Bryan - 12 years ago

He should have gotten at least 10 to miss the entire first round of the playoffs. I don't know why he didn't just shove Harden out of the way like a normal person, you have to be malicious and looking to hurt someone when you full on wind up like that, especially right to the temple, that can do extreme damage.

  • eddy - 12 years ago

Ohh pleasee! Bynum actions was as bad as this one and all he got was 5 games...maybe bynum deserve more but still ppl r never satisfy because this is not the first time we dirty plays u guys forgettin the 80s?...i never seem a more dirty player than lambeer from the detroit piston in the 80s and every year he played dirty and ron artest make a dirty play like this one atleast every 4 years lol...move on guys and relax

  • Enrique - 12 years ago

That is rediculous. Hope harden gets his ass kicked next time. He's action like a little child and so are all you writers
