Langston Hughes has always been a favorite poet of mine because in simple language he has spoken volumes of good sense and counsel. I remember in 1965, when I lived for a year in Sicily and hungered to hear or read English again, I took a bus to Palermo, found the library, and told the librarian I was looking for American poetry. She brought me a book of poems by Langston Hughes which I sat reading for the next hour or so. Hughes is a true American poet!
