This is why I am not in the Graphics/Art Direction biz any longer. The whole Devil Wears Prada, screaming and yelling at 3pm, "We need 5 more ideas by close of business," is so ridiculous. Then you get the ideas done and the big wigs sit on the ideas for 3 weeks and throw it back at you for another fictitious deadline. Live is tooooooo short for that!
Besides the fact, as the article pointed out, companies want more and more out of you (i.e. web designer, print designer, multimedia production, etc.) and then they want to pay you less than $20/hr. I know people at beauty/cosmetic counters in department stores that make more than that and their skill set is knowing what foundation or lipstick is better than the other. I should know since I was hired as a Lancome beauty advisor at a dept store and I had no experience whatsoever.
Spot on, couldn't agree more. The advent of desktop publishing was both a blessing and a curse.
The lack of interest in producing anything well conceived is frightening, simply a bottom line decision making process!
