I love the free books. But I don't mind paying for good books. I had an indie author explain why he sold his books on Amazon for $2.99, which I thought was high for some kind of short stories, each only as long as a good chapter in a book. I understood his point, but there is so much free/$0.99 stuff, it's hard to spend more than that.
If it is an author I have and really liked, I will pay more, but only up to about $5.99 for an Ebook that follows.

When an author comes out with a new book, for promotional purposes, I feel, for a limited time $1.99 is a great price. After the promotion, take it to its original price. But if their not having much luck in selling, then Free for a time is wonderful. Besides, word of mouth is a great way for books to get sold. If you get it for free, you will definitely tell all your friends and in turn they tell other friends, and so on. Especially for e-books.
As a reader years ago, I'd have been thrilled with all the FREE books out there now. As a writer now, many times I buy the book even if the author is new to me because I know the many long hours and hard work they put into it. If I enjoy that first book, I'll buy more.

I of course prefer the free books, but occasionally don't mind paying up to $2.99 for the ebooks.

For an author new to me, I would often try a free book first, but if they've been recommended to me, then paying 2.99 for their book is appropriate.
If it is a new author to me, I would like to try a free read. Also a price of a e-book of a new author to me would depend on the length of the e-book.
