What does the term "no kill" mean to you?

I voted for the second option because a shelter that reaches this milestone should be classified as "no-kill" but it should be working towards the first option. BTW, I hate the term "No-Kill" because too many people still think of it as warehousing animals, often in less than desirable conditions.

"A no kill shelter saves every healthy and treatable pet while euthanizing animals who are medically hopeless and suffering as well as dogs deemed dangerous by a qualified party."

This is the one I voted for, although maybe I should have chosen the third option. There has to be a good evaluation process in place, the person doing the evaluation has to really know their stuff, AND circumstances, such as an animal that is injured and/or frightened, has to be taken into account. Think about it, how would you react to a plastic hand being shoved in your face after being left in a loud, scary place, or if you are a stray who's nothing but skin and bones and someone tries to take away the food?

No kill to me means saving every pet who is healthy and for those pets who are sick or injured rescues and volunteers are called out to take and aid those pets. Ethenasia is only used if the animal is suffering and there is no other option.

the problem is with the term "no kill" -- it has too much emotion attached to it to allow rational discussion.

no I don't have a better term as yet -- but I am working on it

No KILL means exactly that- NO Killing. Our system should be setup to save every animal, not kill as many as we can. The "assessment" of behavior that often leads to a death sentence is flawed and just plain wrong. These poor animals are already frightened to death, and in a terrible situation filled with fear, strange smells and lots of noises. How can a fair assessment be done in 2 minutes in those conditions. There are ways to work with these dogs, the ones who are not as social as we would like them to be. REHAB - working with an animal to socialize them and let them know what behavior is expected of them, is the missing ingredient in all these models, except for one " www.ShelterRevolution.Org . It is sickening that the best we can do is paint pretty pastel colors on the walls and make the building campus beautiful, even if the animals are not allowed to be on the grass. End Cages and allow communal living. Separate the ones who need extra attention and take them off campus to fosters and rehab them There are many rescues doing this now, allowing communal living and training these animals to be ready for their forever home. NO KILL means exactly that - not 10% kill or 20% kill - it means trying our best to SAVE EVERY LIFE.
