Great discussion on SM and communities.
The Poll at the end is great.

I went with other because I think it depends.

For business I think it is networking, for personal I think it is the desire for personal connection (which can also be networking).

Certainly ease of use of creating and joining a group and the increasing popularity of SM help as well.

Maybe a ranking poll would be a good option.
