It actually depends on the story/circumstances, but most of these are a rip-off. James Patterson comes to mind. A number of his more recent books have been released as "free" teasers -- 15 or 20 chapters -- but if you want to know what happens in the rest of the book, you have to buy it at an exorbitant price. The Amazon samples, we know what we're getting and we download them for a reason -- to see if the book is something we're interested in purchasing. Most of the others are just a trap.
