The Boulder County Farmers' Market recently banned dogs. What are your thoughts on allowing non-service dogs in markets, stores and other "human venues"? (Poll Closed)

I indicated "Dogs should be allowed anywhere their owners are allowed, so long as the dogs are well behaved." However, I think this is an inadequately worded poll. The poll leaves no room for two important parts of our society: Personal Responsibility, and the difference between private and public property. I believe (a) any private property owner should be able to make his/her own decision on this issue (and live with the consequences good and bad). I believe (b) public property issues are a matter of local township law/regulation (and the town lives with the consequences good and bad). And I believe (c) it would be a fantastic day if all dog owners recognized that they are personally responsible for their dogs' actions and behaviors, period - and realize there are consequences (again, good or bad).

I saw a woman this afternoon walking into the St. Vrain Market (a grocery store) in Lyons with a large German Shepherd-type dog. Is this legal? Can you really take an animal into a grocery store? I was driving past & didn't see if they made her leave, but I was a bit surprised by what I saw.

Went to the farmers market in Boulder last week. What an improvement! No leashes crossing over to people, no confrontations between dogs or their owners, more room to walk lazily down the aisle. Used to be beween dogs and baby carraiges and thoughtless people who stop in the middle of everything to chit chat, it really was stressful to go and get your produce etc. Now if we could ban baby strollers and inconsiderate stop and chatters we would have it made!

Arnie - I haven't been to the farmer's market yet this year, but every year I have been there have been vendors selling prepared food. Besides the Greek food, pizza, etc., there are usually some tents with samples of salsa, tortillas, or bread. How you missed people eating food at the farmer's market is rather surprising to me.

It's not fun for the dog to be at the farmer's market. What are people thinking? The cement is hot, there's not much shade and it's crowded. Leave your dogs at home please.

I am a breeder and also have trained dogs for 40 years. I don't believe that dogs should be allowed in food establishments even if very much under control by owner unless it is a serviced dog. It is frustrating for me when at a dog show, like we just had this last weekend in Longmont, that so many persons showing dogs neglect to clean up after their own dogs. You would think that persons showing dogs would care the most about the reputation that a show dog brings and would be willing to protect that image.
I have not been to the Farmers Market recently but when I had been there, I did not see any food being eaten while I was there. If the food is not ready to eat I feel that a dog well under control by its handler could be allowed there. Food that is purchased there should be taken home and cleaned for the protection of the buyer anyway.
