you're all wrong the best burger in Ottawa is in the valley. Between Perth and Carleton place on highway 7.
A little place called LAW AND ORDERS the burger is called the rippo burger the most stacked burger with great flavor ever. I call the owner the meat genus. There is a contest if you can eat 2 burgers and a fry it's free within 20 mins try this place . I have had a lot of burgers in my life but this one will stand out forever.

  • Larph - 11 years ago

Having recently moved here from Toronto, I thought I'd have switch from gourmet burgers to shawarmas. But the comments here give me hope. I'll share what I've tried so far.

The Works - Thought it was novel and unsatisfying.
Art is in Bakery - Surprisingly very good and fresh; juicy medium rare with their great bread!
Five Guys - Standard American burger; Quantity > quality, but slightly better burger than The Works

Looking forward to trying Hintonburger. Thanks for the tip!

  • not so fast - 12 years ago

If the last comment were true then all the burger places in this poll should be tied,,,I believe the folks voting in this poll are all fans of THE BEST BURGER IN OTTAWA!!!! And obviously the majority of them eat at the HINTONBURGER..hence Hintonburger is on top of the poll...it's sooooooooo simple. Drop in and find out for yourself.

  • Stephen - 12 years ago

This poll allows 1 person to vote infinite times. Not a reliable poll at all.

  • Pickle - 12 years ago

This is not Ion's WORKS! When I started going to The WORKS my burger was sourced locally ground by a local butcher and served to me by awesome service staff who took the time to got to know me. Now....forget about it! Same hamburger as any restaurant who orders from big box suppliers, and the service is well..just that service. No personality, just whip in take the order, whip out. Good luck in finding a manager to talk about your problems, usually just a "senior server". Forget this place...it's a chain and nothing more. Ion should be ashamed for selling out! Shame on the new owners for screwing up The WORKS!

  • a new burger is in town!! - 12 years ago

It's 2012..the Year of HINTONBURGER!! 2 years old and proving to be a Contender! Hard work , determination ,charisma and a delicious burger....an unbeatable combination!Congrats on topping the charts. WE Love you Hintonburger!

  • PCG - 12 years ago

I have tried 6 out of the 10 burgers and my preference is Art Is In Bakery (AIIB). Hintonburger is a close 2nd. For those of you who haven't tried the burgers at AIIB, they are only available on Saturdays. The toppings are great especially the maple bacon and it is THE juicest burger I've ever had from a restaurant! They grind their meat on site and serves it medium rare (which made me a very happy)!! Their service is also top notch. I agree with some comments that the meat at The Works is underflavoured/underseasoned. I think a good burger is about great meat and traditional toppings, not with Kraft Dinner or with peanut butter, bacon and bananas. Five Guys shouldn't be in the survey, their burgers are bland and overpriced.

  • RogerM - 12 years ago

Too bad people don't try the Baja Burger because it is both cheaper and better than Hintonburger. The meat is more flavourful and the bun nicer. It won best burger last year and deserves it again this year.

  • moe - 12 years ago

Its crazy how Hintonburg & Chez Luciens gets their meat from the same place . ps this poll is rigged. I just got over 10 ppl that voted, only to refresh the page and see ONE vote show up. This is BS.

  • XCX - 12 years ago

CHEZ LUCIENS IS THE BEST . THE END.

  • Dave - 12 years ago

On this list, based purely on taste I'd vote Chez Lucien with Hintonburger a close 2nd...

Add in the value dimension, and I have to give Hintonburger the nod, for its combination of value and taste. That they use local beef, spice the beef well (their BBQ sauce is tasty) and use real cheese (not to mention local, St. Albert's) and real bacon and offer it for $7... add fries and you get an awesome meal for under a 10 spot....

A few "higher-end" restaurants not on this list also do mean burgers, Black Cat Bistro, Arc Hotel, Absinthe... The secret seems to be using O'Brien's beef, as 4 of the above 5 use O'brien's... while Absinthe uses hanger steak (not sure from where, hanger is also not normally a Canadian cut), but those restaurants are pricier... $20 for a burger is hard to swallow for some.

Another I'd recommend, though not technically in Ottawa would be Rutherford Bistro, attached to the Black Sheep Inn in Wakefield... Good music, good food and an ESB from Brasseurs Du Temps... hard to beat.

  • Russ - 12 years ago

Agree with most posters here, The Works burger is inferior, I have tried most of the places on the list and Hintonburger, Vera's, Dick's, Chez Lucien etc are so much better... How many people that live in Orleans or Barrhaven have never ventured out of their neighbourhoods and have never tried these other places voted for The Works.
If you want an overcooked burger from a chain I guess you would vote for The Works. Come on people! Get out and try some great local joints and see what you are missing.

  • loving it - 12 years ago

You know what this poll shows??.. That the little guy is alive and well in Ottawa. So many Good burger spots supported by loyal fans will keep the Big Guys on thier toes..not that they stand a chance as the numbers show.. We want OUR Burgers ..OUR way...VOTE today!!

  • you know who I am - 12 years ago

GO Hintonburger...you can't beat this burger. Why? Cause it's made for and with the heart and soul of Hintonburg.. yes others may be good..but they are the BEST! If you are a Hintonburger you have to vote HINTONBURGER!!

  • Lily - 12 years ago

BAJA BURGER SHACK IS BY FAR THE BEST BURGER! Its so fresh and delicious and the staff is so friendly. But focusing on the Burgers, those are amazing! You can tell by the incredible taste and the great quality is only a couple of the great aspects of there burgers. Apparently they work like 80 ours a week to put out such great food!

  • Emma - 12 years ago

I'm no beef expert but Hintonburger gets their beef right from the farmer. A butcher gets there beef from a farmer too and then the butcher sells it. Which is fresher? Hintonburger! Yumm

  • jeff - 12 years ago

How can anyone vote for anyone other than Vera's, THEY ARE IN A BUTCHER SHOP, that right, they don't have their meat delivered FROM a butcher shop, THEY ARE IN A BUTCHER SHOP. Fresh does not get better than this, hintonburger can't even touch Vera's

  • Taste tester - 12 years ago

Hintonburger yesterday, today and tomorrow. Why is The Works included? It's a mini-chain and could easily win on sheer numbers alone, although right now (Friday, June 22), a mere 60+ votes separate these two competitors, a miracle and a huge tribute to the Hintonburger.

  • chris - 12 years ago

Ha, I appreciate the 'value' at Connors - 6.66$ for a burger and fries is the best pub value in town....but you definitely get what you pay for ....there's no way it's among the best in the city (and this is coming from someone who eats the Connors burgers at least a couple times a month). Also, re. my question about Five Guys - I didn't realize it had to be local chains....still, Five Guys is pretty great.

  • Francis - 12 years ago

How created this list and why is Connor's Gaelic Pub on Bank Street not on the list?

  • chris - 12 years ago

There's no way anyone would vote for anyone else if they had tried Hintonburger. Hands down, best. On another note though - no Five Guys on the list? That's probably the second best (although still be a long way)

  • Kimberly - 12 years ago

Hintonburger all the way! The only reason The Works has the most amount of votes is because it's the most well known and has locations across the city. People...try the neighbourhood joints! Sometimes it's the sketchy looking places that have the best to offer.

  • Penny - 12 years ago

    Vote Hintonburger

  • Jane - 12 years ago

Ottawa doesn't know from burgers. The only burger on this list that even comes close is Vera's and it's a franchise. A burger - a true burger - should be able to stand on it's own with just the basics - lettuce, tomatoes, onions and cheese, and one or two condiments. Nothing pretentious. From there is can be made into something else, with whatever toppings you desire. I feel like most of these just try too hard. Hintonburger is more often than not burnt. The Works is overdone and overrated. A pretzel bun? Don't even get me started...

  • cmc - 12 years ago

The works should not be a listed. Yes they are known for their insane amounts of burgers, but it is a franchise! Not Ottawa Based. I would have to say CHEZ LUCIENS has the best burgers. Excellent staff, Excellent food, affordably priced, and excellent atmosphere. I absolutely love going there. Best hangout.

  • Peter - 12 years ago

The works should not be on this list, it is a chain and it far from the best burger...really there should be a panel of judges that will consider price plus sides...works wouldn't even make the top five, that much I promise.

  • Terry - 12 years ago

I've enjoyed the fare at every place I've tried on this list but Hintonburger got my vote. Surprised Five Guys wasn't on the list. I would have to say Dick's is a close third. And I've tried the Works, it was was good, I liked it, they just didn't make my top three. I hope to visit some of the other places soon. In between my salads that is. (With some of the comments, I'd hate to think that owners or employees are getting involved.)

  • tam - 12 years ago

Brother's Beer Bistro has a kicka$$ burger and my vote. Can't wait to try some of the others mentioned here. Also - Mike is right on the money regarding Farm Boy's Thai Turkey and Bacon Cheese burgers. You can get them grilled at the chef counter - great lunch for $2.49

  • Chris - 12 years ago

I could eat Dicks every day. So good!
Also, their california club sandwich is pretty much the best club sandwich I've ever had in my life.

  • Olivier - 12 years ago

Chez Lucien is the best Burger I've tried in Ottawa. Plus the skinny fries and salad that comes with it are perfect. A little hidden gem in the Market!

  • Andy - 12 years ago

To me it's more than just the burger. There are a number of great tasting burgers in Ottawa, but for me, it also comes down to what comes on the side. If it comes with fries, what type are they and how are they cooked? Does it come with a salad, or are you lucky enough to get both? In the end, if your side is crap, it could ruin the main focus...the burger itself.

  • Jessica - 12 years ago

For all of you who think the Works has dry, overcooked, tasteless beef, you definitely have not done your research. What you're not tasting in this high-quality meat is the added fat, salts, and preservatives usually present in other burger patties. The Works' burgers are fresh and never frozen as well as never pushed or prodded on the grill. This is the reason it takes them 20 minutes to cook, whereas other burger patties are of lower-quality meat and are pressed into the grill to speed up the cooking process. Not only does the Works offer beef burgers but you also have the choice of elk, chicken breast, ground turkey or a portobello mushroom cap as your burger patty. These delicious burgers with 69 fresh topping combinations and your choice of whole-wheat, white, or gluten-free bun really make this a personalized burger experience. A great place for vegetarian options and you can make it healthy too!

  • Monique - 12 years ago

    Hintonburger all the way!!

  • Micah - 12 years ago

The works is a chain! I've had some delicious times there, however, the last two times , at different locations the burgers were burned, and the toppings were of poor quality. Old soft spongey avocado... Dissappointing for sure... guess that's what happens when you push out mom and pop and franchise up

  • Lexy - 12 years ago

Yes there should be no chains here. Just little guys, there the ones who actually care about what you want and how you want it.

Also I feel that many who do choose a chain over the little guys are too afraid to 'try' places usually run by family or friends. Ive heard many people say oh they dont carry out the same kind of practises as the chains do when it come to cleanliness, atmosphere and quality...

I beg to differ. If I can ea at a little place vs. a big chain, IM THERE:)

These people know what there doing, and appreciate you as well as probably having been there for ages. Whereas in a chain you can go in three times a month and different people work there. Where the personal touch there.

  • judy - 12 years ago

I say hurray for the little guy..why not vote for the place that started with nothing but heart and a need to give it's best for its community in everyway it could. They outsource their product locally, they support their local schools and community, they themselves live in the community and hire from the community. They are rewarded with a loyal customer base which in turn supports them . They are only one location against a top chain, yet they are striving to grow without selling out to cheaper more economical methods and products. They have their customer's needs put first..not their won. Surely it would be easier for them to go the easier route. They chose not to. They chose to maintain the quality of burger that has won their customers over from the very start. The customer has a voice here and is listened too..This is more then a Good Burger,,,this is YOUR Good Burger. VOTE FOR HINTONBURGER!!!

  • Ella - 12 years ago

Despite Brothers Beer Bistro being so new, am glad to see it on this list. Was there last week and blown away by their burger. Was the best I've had in years. Definitely worth a trip to the Byward Market. If the poll is run again next year, the Brothers burger will shoot to the top. I'm telling ya - it's delicious!!

  • David Sorensen - 12 years ago

While the Workshop have the mostrar coices for variety, Dick's have by far the best básico burgers!!

  • Ben - 12 years ago

The Works does have the most interesting toppings, but when you put them on a dry over cooked patty it doesn't much matter.

Just had dinner at Baja Burger. Delicious juicy patty, just the right amount of 'special sauce' and an incredible fresh soft bun. Everything was in proportion, and you get to eat it right next to the beach with a cold beer. I am going back. Many times.

  • Burger man Ottawa - 12 years ago

Obviously none of you have tried a Hinton or art-is-in once u do u will never go back Cuz the works is crap

  • sarah - 12 years ago

The Works is a chain. How unfair to have a chain of 8 restaurants go against independant restaurants. I have tried the Works more than any other place on the list because there is one near me.

  • Rob - 12 years ago

Take Dad out today for a great burger dinner... take him to Hintonburger, 1096 Wellington Street.

  • Randy - 12 years ago

I love a good old fashion burger. Hintonburger has just that. VOTE FOR HINTONBURGER.

  • Penny - 12 years ago

HINTONBURGER is the best, they do not ever freeze their beef, they make it fresh everyday and have the beef delivered in from the butcher (O'brien Meats) a few times a week. If you like a good old fashion burger you must try Hintonburger. Once you have tried it give them your vote.

  • paul - 12 years ago

HINTONBURGER.....burn the beef at the burg, hintongburgER!!!

  • Ellie - 12 years ago

The Works, a lower grade of meat, are you actually kidding me? Wow. If you know anything at all about meat, you know the exact opposite is true. Their onion rings might overwhelm, but their burgers are quality. Best to avoid their lineups, though: takeout all the way.

  • jake - 12 years ago

the contest should be what is the most popular burger place in ottawa, if you wanted the best tasting burger, simply get a panel of judges and do it, doubt half the people who or more who eat at the works have never even heard of most these other places before.

  • vikster - 12 years ago

The works is the best vegetarian option... if the other places catered to all demographics maybe they would have been chosen instead.

  • Kyle - 12 years ago

The Works is completely overrated and incredibly overpriced. Their burgers are small and you're paying for the novelty, not a quality burger. Vera's burgers from The Butchery are great, even better if you get some from the meat counter and cook them yourself at home. Great burgers and definitely much cheaper than the Works.

  • Toot - 12 years ago

    Toot toot.

  • Fr3lncr - 12 years ago

I agree with many of the other comments. The Works isn't the best burger. Whether they should be on the list or not? I don't know... they are a chain but a small chain. Burgers on Main has two locations but they aren't disqualified so how 'big' do you need to be to not be considered?

I haven't tried all the places yet, just Dick's and Baja Burger Shack. I was impressed with Baja but my I still put Dick's as the better burger between the two.

Still want to try Hintonburger, Vera's and Burgers on Main.

And Five Guys is just the worst over rated place I have tried. Sure, they are better than say McDonald's but it is just a bland pile of slop at the end of the day. You are better off staying at home and making your own burgers as they will turn out better.

  • David - 12 years ago

Here's the thing: The Works is okay, but many of the other local joints are way better - fresher, tastier and less expensive.

What is The Works' secret? Easy. When you have 8 restaurants to promote the "best burger poll" then you're gonna win just by virtue of sheer numbers; that's it, that's all.

Notice they didn't win by a factor of 8, however. The humble Hintonburger has half the votes The Works has based on one location - and one loyal mob of fans. So the lesson is The Works wins, but by quantity, not quality.

But Hintonburger is the clear favourite, proportionally speaking. Can't wait to try some of the other places, too!

  • Guy Annable - 12 years ago

If the Works is a chain and they should not be on the Poll ( re first Comment) , why is'nt 5 GUYS not on the Poll, Veras' are still the best, you can even buy them and cook them at home and put your own signature on ottawa Freshest burger, even if it is from Vancouver and you could too consider it as well a Chain....what defines a chanin...more than one location..... we need a definition of this

  • Sally - 12 years ago

The works is a chain, and should not be on the list...besides they are not that great. The other choices are good.

  • Graeme - 12 years ago

I love this poll. I voted for the WORKS for the reasons most people stated above. And I have been eating their burgers ever since they were a single outlet. But now, it is the only place I go and I have not tried most of the other places.

This poll has brought out with the comments, all these other establishments that I will now be tempted to try - that is the best kind of poll. Who cares which eatery is at the top; what I care for is what eateries are named and why - thus, enticing me to a new experience and that is EXACTLY what this will do for many.

In a year from now, this same poll will have much different results as a consequence.

  • Gord - 12 years ago

Dick's on Merivale is the clear winner as far as I'm concerned. We eat there regularly and the burgers are always freshly cooked and served on delicious but sturdy buns that don't fall apart into the meal. Extras such as lettuce and tomato fresh and locally grown combined with an order of onion rings which are "to die for" rounds out an excellent eating experience.

  • Jennifer - 12 years ago

Metrix, I very much agree. Brothers Beer Bistro is delish! The Works.... Sure they have lots of toppings, but the meat ... very bland IMO. Hintonburger also very good, they season their patties well. Vera's in Bells Corners, not nearly as good as the original out in Vancouver. Black Cat, have never tried.... hmmm. Preston isn't far ... thanks for the tip Jack.

All in all, I will stick with Brothers Beer Bistro. Great quality.

  • Jack - 12 years ago

Umm. The black cat anyone? Easily the best buger in Ottawa. But maybe I should keep my mouth shut so the secret doesn't get out.

  • Leesa - 12 years ago

Surprised not to see 5 guys here! I've had most, but not all burgs on this top ten, and 5 guys is still my favorite! :) Enjoy!

  • IamGreg - 12 years ago

What kind of poll is this? One chain verses a bunch of local eatery? Unfair!!! might as well put McD in there..

Surprised that the following hasn't made the list:
Five Guys - flat top grilled (American chain)
    Manhattan burger (in Minto Place)

they do do a decent burger, but there are others put out a decent burger too. Wonder how these ten came about? You can tell by the results, 3-4% for most and nearly the rest for "I sold out and now make Pizza" Works; were quality has gone down hill, like this divided government town

Me, the best burger is the ones made a home with fresh ground local beef mixed with ___, ___ and ____ with ___ oh and fresh herbs, garlic and ______!

If only I could find out how to make Hintonburger's garlic sauce...

  • Vernon - 12 years ago

I think it's a toss-up between 5 Guys and Hintonburger. Hintonburger is delicious but can be rather messy. The bacon for it is first rate. 5 Guys has the burger, fry experience down pat. Free peanuts and extremely fast service. Their burger was almost a religious experience.

  • Matrix - 12 years ago

I've tried the burger at the Brothers Beer Bistro and i have to say it's right up there with some of the best in Ottawa and deserves to be on this list. Everything is made in house....can't really beat that i say!

  • larry - 12 years ago

    Seriously, the Works?

Just because there's one in every corner of the city doesn't make it the best.

  • Chris - 12 years ago

little disappointed in the turnout for the work's..great to have a homegrown spot, well, it was good before it was sold. I'd say it's the popular choice, but likely not the critics choice if put to any real test. a lot of great contenders, but i really like what the beer brothers are doing, just a great taste experience with all the beer options, just my kinda thing. BTW, anyone else notice the phrase "vote in our meaty poll"? at the top of the page, sounds different then it spells..

  • Matt - 12 years ago

And the Works no longer seem to use fresh cut fries. I realize this is a burger poll but.....

    The Works has sold out

  • Chris - 12 years ago

Really? The Works?...that's a terrible burger. It used to be good before it was sold.

  • Joey - 12 years ago

Richard is right....So it appears that all the employees and family members of the works have been instructed to come on and vote. Good for them, but they are far from ottawa's best burger and they are overpriced with lousy service to boot.

  • Mike - 12 years ago

Five Guys Burgers are also VERY delicious and I believe there are three locations in Ottawa now!!! To the guy that mentioned Saslove's (JJ) - I agree, and also encourage you to try the pre-fab burgers from Farm Boy. Chedder Bacon burger and Spicy Thai Turkey Burger are KILLER!!!

  • JJ - 12 years ago

Personally I think Sasloves makes the best burger patties. Take them home, grill em, and put your own toppings. I've had 75% of the burgers on this list and none compare to Sasloves.

  • Top Bun - 12 years ago

Clearly all the Burger spots on this list are worthy and deserving to be somewhere on the top 10. For clarity sake I'd like to point out that at The WORKS we use only AA/AAA Ontario beef that is Federally inspected, containing absolutley no trimmings...Fresh Hand-pressed daily in our shops and never frozen. There is absolutely no filler or additives and we allow our patty, combined with our 70 fifferent toppings make for the Ultimate Gourmet Burger experience.

  • Chris - 12 years ago

I've got to agree with the other commenters here. I do like The Works, but there are definitely better burgers out there. The Works is a chain, and the most well-known by far, and therefore it will probably receive the most votes. I'm going to check out the places on the list that I haven't heard of before!

  • steph - 12 years ago

Clearly those voting for the works have never tried any of the other competitors burgers. The freida and deigo burger at chez lucien destroys any burger from the works. I have lost faith in the people of ottawa. Try something new!

  • Simon - 12 years ago

I think Vera's in Bells Corners is THE place for burgers... I like that it's a small business and that the burgers are RIGHT out of the Butchery... Never have any questions about where the meat comes from and whether the meat is going to be good... I just know it'll be great!

  • Kevin - 12 years ago

I agree with Richard... ate at the The Works this past weekend and, like every time I've been there, the patties are severely underflavoured/underseasoned. Almost tastes like a lower grade of meat.

  • Richard - 12 years ago

There is big a difference between Ottawa's best burger, and Ottawa's most popular burger joint. Online voting is never an accurate way to determine who has the best food.
