Alas, there is no longer honor amongst thieves.

I think the way you handle this is to let the game begin. If you have a suspicion that the pitcher is doctoring the ball, THEN you ask the umpire to take a look at it. You don't get the guy thrown-out before he has even thrown a pitch!

Frank Robinson, when he was manager of the Nationals pulled the same cheap trick on Mike Scioscia a few years ago and I lost all respect for him because of it. I thought it was a low blow then, and I think it's a low blow in this case as well.

I don't believe it was wrong that he got kicked out...what I find wrong is the fact that Johnson felt it was OK to cheat when Peralta pitched for the Nationals. I am not sure how anybody can respect Johnson after this...

If maddon says its bush league or cowardly of Johnson to call out peralta, what do u call putting pine tar on the inside of ur glove?

I think Peralta had done something wrong to the organization or someone in the Nationals organization while with them previously.

I have been a roving instructor and a scout for many pro baseball teams and have met and even worked with Davey Johnson in the past. I don' t mean this as inside information because it is not. However I will say that what I know of Peralta and what I know of Davey Johnson (who is very sharp and yet plays dumb as a fox like very few people can) I feel that a previous score was just settled and Davey brought it out before he pitched a to a batter to let Peralta know that it is nothing more than an old score being settled.

There are a lot of statements made in sports and particularly in baseball that are not candidly and openly spoken. They do however get delivered, even in the way this went down, that lets all parties involved know that the message was delivered and received.

I agree its cheating but if its an "unwritten rule" how can he actually get in trouble? Now days if it isnt in writing then you havent done anything wrong, thats just how society looks at things. But he must of left on bad terms if his previous coach passed on the information. Im just playing devils advicote

Cheating is cheating no matter how you get the information. The only thing I would have suggested is that Johnson tell Peralta he was going to have the umpire check his glove.
