Did Governor Christie go too far when he insulted the reporter?

Gov. Christie was elected by the people to do a job. Also, he was a trained Prosecutor experiencing many battles in court. A hot day, he's speacking and an ignorant reporter tries twice to over-step his directions. Some of the preceding comments are either personal attacts against the Gov. or "namby-pamby" quips from those who couldn't control a kindergarten classroom. The Gov. was insulted---sometimes like a judge is on the bench. He had every right to call the reporter out for what he "chose" to be--an idiot and "stupid". Dudge

Impeach Obama and Roberts. Kil* two birds with one stone

  • Joanne - 12 years ago

He's a fat as*hole and i pray that Romney does not pick him as VP

  • Jane Washington - 12 years ago

Greta, it must only be in your mind that it was insulting. To your average person it was no big deal, tough love needs to kick in at some point in a persons life. That reporters time was then!

  • Alfred Berutti - 12 years ago

Shame on you Greta, you offered no context. What was the subject of the newsconference? What was the nature of the question posed by the reporter vs. the purpose of the meeting? Without such background how can a decision on the appropriateness of Christies remark be evaluated?

  • Go_Christie - 12 years ago

And tell me again why he won't run for President, DANG we need him in the White House. TELL IT LIKE IT IS!!!

  • Bob J - 12 years ago

Another thing, did you notice that even after the gov. called him out for being off topic, the guy proceeds to try and ask the same stupid question a second time.

  • Bob J - 12 years ago

NO he did not go too far!!! These cocky punk so-called "jounalists" think they're so dang important and think they're entitled to ask anything, no matter how off topic or rude. Thank you Gov. C for putting him in his place.
Gawd I really like Chris Christie. What a political breath of fresh air he is. Many of us in this liberal cesspool of a state I live in would love to have him as our gov.

  • Loraine Ellison - 12 years ago

He could have just walked away, not even acknowledge the reporter. I like the Governor but this comment sounded like bullying to me and not an example for anyone to follow.

  • Lea - 12 years ago

Gov. Christie was Not Wrong in calling the reporter stupid and an idiot. After all, the reporter Did stray from Topic. Everyone knows [by now] that Gov. Christie is a "No Nonsense" kind of guy. So it should come as No Surprise when Gov. Christi calls a stupid/idiot exactly what they are. The mainstream media has been "getting away" with "stupidity/ignorance/rudeness and disrespect[Except when it comes to Obama, their Saviour]..... It's High Time they get called out for it.... Maybe when they are Dressed Down in front of America, they'll Learn to act accordingly.
Hats Off To You, Gov. Christie!

  • Dave in MD - 12 years ago

Obama asked for sevility and then continued to bash everything that angered him. Then he ignored the lefts attacks on conservative women. Christy needs not to appoligize or recant his statement. I love it! Allways a good show Greta! Thanks!!!!!

  • Becky Watkins - 12 years ago

I've admired Gov. Christie and appreciate his ability to tell it like he sees it. However, I think he crosses the line when he calls a reporter out for doing what reporters usually do (try to get an answer that may not be on the topic at hand) using the words "stupid" and "idiot." It is beneath his position as Governor. It sometimes appears he enjoys turning a public Q&A into a "bully pulpit." Makes me begin to question his true character.

  • Patricia Vizzoni - 12 years ago

I generally like Gov. Christie. His colorful language is a change from the ordinary. But as time goes by, it seems he always stoops to bullying tactics to address his frustrations with people. Some think he is saying it like it is, but there are more civilized ways of expressing displeasure at someone's misbehavior. It seems like Gov. Christie hasn't learned this, yet. A polite, well worded rebuke can be far more effective than resorting to name calling. If the Governor has higher political aspirations, he really needs to act like a grown up.

  • Dolores Aguirre Johnston - 12 years ago

This is in response to "Steve"..."Christie is a total Wanker ! Wish he had been the GOP candidate ! Would be a cakewalk for Obama"

    Steve,
I have news for you, Republicans are happy to have someone like Christie with a backbone and a freshness, we have not seen in politics since the late Senator Barry Goldwater.

Go ahead, vote for Obama. My health insurance has already gone up.

    Obama is his worst enemy.

  • Kati Calahan - 12 years ago

If Gov. Christie were the person I had once hoped - and actually thought - he was, he would handle these types of things with greater effect in a more intelligent, less "stupid" way. I always heard a truly intelligent person has a vocabulary that negates the need to use curse words. I believe the same can be applied to behaviour - true intelligence - and class - would achieve the desired results differently - and set a good example for others at the same time. I am not only disappointed in Gov. Christie, but getting very tired of his childish outbursts. There is way too much of that everywhere these days, in my opinion. Thank you for the opportunity to vent.

By the way, your show is one I try very hard not to miss. Excellent, it is.

  • Angela - 12 years ago

You Go Gov. Christi!!!!! He could never go to far as far I am concerned ... He is the one we need in the White House to kick some serious butt !!!!!!!! We need Obama OUT ASAP!!!

  • Samuel Hedgepeth - 12 years ago

I am sick of the mainstream press and the direction they are trying to take the country. They cloak themselves with the freedom of the press banner to push their agenda. About time someone stood up to them. It doesn't happen enough in my opinion.

  • Fred - 12 years ago

The 99% liberal dishonest media is a cancer on our country. The sooner our media can be taught to report all the news accurately the sooner our country will be able to make the right decisions and crawl out from under this Socialist/Marxist nightmare. Gov Christie obviously knows that and is working the problem. YES!!!!

  • vicky fox - 12 years ago

I glad he can stand up to the media. If the reporter didn't understand staying on the topic maybe he had better go back to grade school until he understand directions.

  • Ric - 12 years ago

Where was the "insult?" What am I missing? It occurs to me that Gov Christie made it clear that he would entertain questions relevant to the event, and he drove that point home in his rebuke of that reporter - who clearly had his own agenda. Unfortunately for him, he had to be taken to the woodshed- publicly- and now understands that there is only one agenda on the table: Gov Christie's. Journalism 101.

  • Peter - 12 years ago

Firm yes, but rude no. He lost his composure and personally insulted someone he probably knew little about, which makes him look like an irrational idiot. I lost a lot of respect for him. I don't want leaders who are disrespectful or mean to others. It's not neccessary and undermines respect.

  • TBiondie - 12 years ago

It's refreshing to see a conservative elected official not let the lame street media try and control things after they were told that only questions about the subject at hand were to be asked. It's about time other elected officials do the same and quit letting the media get away with what they want.

  • Billie - 12 years ago

There is such a thing as manners and decorum. Christie can be outspoken without being rude. It would have been simple just to say, "please stay on topic" then go on to the next person. The terms stupid and idiot that were BOTH used was not necessary. To call a person stupid is a personal attack equal to calling Christie a fat tub of lard

  • sharon - 12 years ago

I agree that the media is obnoxious and rude but Gov. Christie just lowered his own image by calling names. As a public figure, he should demonstrate more restraint and dignity. Our society is growing more and more rude and coarse. It's difficult to respect people who choose to express themselves publicly that way.

  • Pete Marr - 12 years ago

I am a total conservative and agree with Christie's general politics. However, he is really the idiot. Does he think he is cool with all of his smart-alec responses. Being blunt and to the point is one thing. Christie's high and mighty attitude is more than I can stand. I certainly hope that Romney doesn't pick him for No.2.

  • Maggie - 12 years ago

I cannot imagine how hard it must be to refrain from punching out some some reporters. They think that it is their right to delve into any subject at any time! Would like to see more "speakers." stand up to all.

  • Pat - 12 years ago

Love the Gov. , but he needs a little more civility and a lot less Jersey.

  • Susan Smith - 12 years ago

I'll take a gruff truthful response over a lie everytime. "It's absolutely not a tax."

  • Lea - 12 years ago

I think Governor Chris Christie tells it like it is. The reporter should have paid closer attention to "the rules" and the "topic". Governor Christie is a Refreshing Voice of Candor, in the world of politics. We Love him!

  • Pat - 12 years ago

Love the Gov. , but he needs a little move civility and a lot less Jersey.

  • Maggie - 12 years ago

I cannot imagine how hard it must be to refrain from punching out some some reporters. They think that it is their right to delve into any subject at any time! Would like to see more "speakers." stand up to all.

  • Wanda - 12 years ago

Governor Christie has a "back-bone" that every conservative leader needs to develop! The Governor is very obviously not a game playing lair, but says it like it is! We don't have to second guess what he means because he makes himself clear from the start. How totally refreshing!

  • Kathy jonas - 12 years ago

I think gov christie was spot on. He is one guy that doesn't spin. He says what he feels and he seems an honest guy....not something most politician have a clue about. Christie is a breath of fresh air!

  • L Reynolds - 12 years ago

I don't think he was obligated to answer the question; however, I don't think you have to be so
boisterous. It reminds me of our present administration. We wonder what has happened to our younger generation......well, this is it. They watch our governors, congressmen and even our President act arrogant and smart mouthed. Our country is going to the dogs. And we have so many to blame. I am definitely in the minority in this poll.

  • Karl - 12 years ago

He's a breath of fresh air. We need more like him.

  • terry s - 12 years ago

it is time that politicians say and do exactly what is on their mind. forget political correctness that as a voter is what i want to hear.

  • Audrey Dennis - 12 years ago

I think the Governor, with all due respect is rude most of the time. It is nice to say what we think, however, there is a way to express yourself without sounding like a thug.

  • Gloria - 12 years ago

Gov. Christie is my hero. He should be able to call out the press. He is a breath of fresh air.

  • Tom Williams - 12 years ago

Christie is Christie. When he says "Stay on topic" he means "Stay On Topic"! The reporter asked for it.

  • Jeanne Struble - 12 years ago

If reporters are so stupid, then maybe when they get pointed out as such enough will be enough. Go Gov!!!

  • Jim - 12 years ago

It's about time! We need to start standing up! I want my leaders to have a spine, quit apologizing! Say what you mean, and stand behind it!

  • A Schwen - 12 years ago

I LOVE MR. CHRISTIE. It is so nice to see a strong honest person in office these days. Not some one that tries to pull the wool over your eyes , but one who just puts the truth in your face. GO Governor Christie.

  • Allen - 12 years ago

The governor is probably right but he needs to be less crass about it. He holds a very public position and does need to show some class.

  • Ron Conklin - 12 years ago

He went to far when he used the word "stupid". He could have just as easily said something like: "I believe we need keep your questions on topic like I stated. Please keep them on topic. If you have one that doesn't fall into that category, leave it with my secretary and someone will get back to you."

  • Daniel sabol - 12 years ago

Obama lied about the healthcare tax at least Gov. Christie tells us the truth

  • Kathy jonad - 12 years ago

I think gov christie was spot on. He is one guy that doesn't spin. He says what he feels and he seems an honest guy....not something most politician have a clue about. Christie is a breath of fresh air!

  • Dolores Aguirre Johnston - 12 years ago

Some of the questions many of the reporters in the media ask very, very silly and stupid questions, and sometimes they don't make sense. I am so glad there is finally someone who calls it like it is.

Thank you to the Governor for his no nonsense approach to dealing with the press.

  • Jan Drews - 12 years ago

Good for him. I like his honesty and telling it like it is. Would like to see more politicians with a backbone!!! No "double talk" with him.

  • Jonathan Barg - 12 years ago

The "media" in general is held in such low regard that I approve of the Governor administering a dope slap to this numbskull. If he told the assembled media to keep the questions on topic, this cub reported from some community college deserved what he got. Instead of a major scoop, he got a paddling and sent home with no dinner. Bravo. Lawyers, used car salesmen, reporters?

  • Bob Duckett - 12 years ago

If a reporter is told what the subject will be at a press conference they should have the courtesy and good sense to stick to the subject and not apear to be an idiot.

  • larry - 12 years ago

reporters are always trying to change the direction of topic.
    the reporter was an idiot!
I would have called him something much worse.

  • Stevie - 12 years ago

Christie is a total Wanker ! Wish he had been the GOP candidate ! Would be a cakewalk for Obama

  • John - 12 years ago

Maybe the reporter will stay on topic from here on out instead of trying to be different from everyone else. There is always an idiot in every crowd, an it almost always a liberal.

  • kj Staff - 12 years ago

The drive by media just loves to bring up crap that has nothing to do with the topics just to get a dig in. Well it's about time the SOBs get it back. Thank you Gov. Christie for being honest and straight with these idiots!

  • Elaine - 12 years ago

Way to go Governor! I am behind you...someone with a spine.

  • John - 12 years ago

Maybe the reporter will stay on topic from here on out instead of trying to be different from everyone else. There is always an idiot in every crowd, an it almost always a liberal.

  • Tracy - 12 years ago

Good for the Governor, it's about time someone in this country starts speaking the truth....I like the way you don't have to guess with him...It would be shocking if someone else did it, but with him you know when he says he'll take questions on subject that he means it...No confusion with him.

  • Tom - 12 years ago

The liberal press are a bunch of boneheads and need to be put in place!

  • Carolyn Albins - 12 years ago

I never liked Christie. He's an embarrassment to Republicans. I hope Romney does not select him as VP. I would never vote for Obama but might vote for Ron Paul if Christie is involved.

  • JD Miller - 12 years ago

Everything was fine and actually good to hear, except when he called him an "idiot" - That went too far!

  • Frances Dalley - 12 years ago

My husband and I think he was rude, but the reporter deserved it. Reporters are often rude and ignorant - let them get a little of what they dish out. That's our opinion.

  • Molly O'Connell - 12 years ago

The press has become aggresively out of line. I am personally happy the Chris Christie speaks out for all of us when he tells them off.

  • Toni - 12 years ago

Gov. Christie does no wrong in my eyes.

  • Mary Alice Morgan - 12 years ago

To me it's a little of both, but I don't blame him.

  • Al - 12 years ago

    LOVE THE GOV!!!

  • Paul LaWonn - 12 years ago

It is time that our leaders start 'shooting back' when really stupid questions are asked. I would have asked what college the journalist got his/her degree from because I would check what that college is actually teaching. This is nothing more than some stupid journalist asking a family how they feel after a loved one has been killed or died. The Governor did the right thing!!!

  • s - 12 years ago

He obviously doesn't know when enough is enough.

  • Judy Hamby - 12 years ago

Good to know someone will stop these idiot questions from being asked by over zealous reporters.

  • Gary G - 12 years ago

HE DID NOT GO FAR ENOUGH. I PERSONALLY HAVE NO USE FOR RUDE REPORTERS EXCEPT TO USE THEM TO CLEAN MY TOILET!

  • David Whittaker - 12 years ago

I did not hear what the reporter asked him, but I think that the media for the most part has become far to liberal and most of them are idiots!

  • Glenn Carr - 12 years ago

I'm proud of the Governor for standing up and putting these ignorant reporters in their place...Good job Gov. Christie.

  • Pat Leath - 12 years ago

How refreshing to have a Governor simply tell it like it is!

  • Susan - 12 years ago

I seem to recall Obama slamming a Texas TV reporter, but he was a strong leader for doing that!

  • Bev Fehrenbacher - 12 years ago

Have developed such an animosity toward the press, guess I am happy any time someone sticks to them even if it is not justified or is over the top.
