Is there a place for assisted suicide in Canada?

I Think it's easy to say precautions can be taken to prevent abuse, but not so easy to enforce, and the people who will suffer are the people who need protection the most. Here is an article on some serious issues with assisted suicide.

I think that in certain situations assisted suicide should be legal. There would have to be a hearing to determine if the request is valid first. For example, if the person who wants to end his/her life is able to communicate their desire, or if someone has a living will in which they stated under certain circumstances they would choose assisted suicide. Once it was approved by the courts, you should be free to end your life.

We need to move away from the debate of whether or not assisted suicide should be legal, and toward the debate on best way to make it legal.

Arguments against assisted suicide rely on residual religious concepts of the inherent value of life, or the difficulties in preventing abuse. The former is being increasingly revealed as nonsense, and the latter is far from an insurmountable hurdle (especially in light of the horrors we inflict on people by forcing them to continue "living").
