Has everyone forgotten Billie Holiday? Hello, people!? Now I know she didn't have a wide range but she had feeling and really felt what she sang. She deserves to be somewhere in that last! Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, and Celine Dion over Billie...wow, someone really needs to look back in history first before putting up a list!

MARIAH OF COURSE - 12 years ago
Mariah Carey of course. She has the second widest range on earth. Literally.
I hate questions like these when you take several very different people and ask which one's best. The worlds best 'vocalist' is undoubtabley Mariah Carey, due to her sheer range, power, and technique that she has, but I would say some of the older soul and Jazz singers mentioned deliver a better phrasing to song lyrics. Mariah's style is too perfect, she's almost scared of singing flat notes, but singing flat notes to the right lyric can add an intensity to the emotion of the song, which Aretha and Ella were very good at capturing. Celine's got a beautiful voice but is basically a Barbera Striesand Version 2 model, a prettier and cleaner upgrade of the original

Ella is the best by far but you might want to spend some time some rainy night by the fire with Julie London singing "Go Slow".
Peace

The title of this discussion speaks directly to the greatest female "vocalist" - and as far as vocal ranges are concerned - Chaka Khan is in my opinion the greatest vocalist of all time. Do some searches on YouTube for Chaka Khan and vocal range - see what you guys think. Great discussion! Thanks KRTH!

Donna Summer of course... her voice never changed! I had seen her twice in the past 10 years and honestly it was better than anything I have ever listened to. Plus my brother who is no longer with us just totally idolized her!!! Can you blame him?
Thank You

There is really no discussion it is very clearly Whitney Houston. Wow, what an incredible voice. The best I have every heard! What a huge loss!
