With a veterans group coming out against the practice, do you think the Marine Corps should continue to support the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC)?

Having the UFC represent the USMC trivializes the sacrifices that so many men and women made to honor and defend our nation. Seeing the disrespectful attitude the organization has and encourages against lgbt communities and women is disgusting and is a slap in the face to what my grandfather gave to his country.

I am an 10 yr Veteran, and I don't think the Marines or any military branch should be endorsing the UFC. They are not warriors, as there is nothing remotely honorable about a cage fight. Honor is honed and instilled by honorable men, not a two man gang bang!

Wow, you guys are going about this all wrong. MMA has been known to be one of the safest combat sports so far. On average 4 pro boxers a year die of brain trauma. We've had maybe 3 dead and 5 severally injured in the last 15 years. These gentlemen are athletes, professionals, and some are even serviceman. So do everyone a favor, get off this brutal sport bs as an excuse. This country has been killing men, women, and children for centuries with no reason other then for money. So if two professionals want to step into the cage and fight, in a style that has been proven to be safer then boxing, the let them. It's no different then a quarterback getting sacked and driven into the ground and boxer knocking someones head off. Don't really know what else to say.

The Marine Corps represents honor, courage & dignity, which is completely opposite from the UFC, a company that tolerates their top fighters joking about raping women and homophobic slurs. The NBA or any other legitimate sports company would not tolerate the dishonorable conduct of the UFC fighters & their president. I think the Marines should listen to our veterans & pull their funding to send a clear message to the UFC that they need to clean up their act.

I think it is up to the Marines to decide what kind of image they want. In the past few years the stories and scandals coming out of the Marines has led non-military people to think that the Marines are crazy, homophobic, brutal, dangerous to women and lacking respect for human dignity. I know many Marines, friends and family, and this is not the image they have, or would like others to have about the Marines. It is not what they fought for. However, you are who your friends are. The image of the UFC is crazy, homophobic, brutal, dangerous to women and lacks respect for human dignity. If the Marines do not want this image, than they should not associate themselves with this group and chalk the past few year's scandals up to individuals actions and not the ideology of the group. But it is up to the Marines to decide what image they want to put out there.

I believe the Marines should take their name out of the sponsorship from UFC. Not only does the UFC misrepresent what a marine should be. I personally do not support the military but when I think of a marine or any other military branch, i would definitely want to associate it with the president of the UFC, Dana White, who uses homophobic slurs such as "faggot" and does not fire UFC fighters that would say "Rape is the new missionary" ( twitter). Other than that, it does not seem fair to the taxpayers, that the Marine corps has already spent more than 2 million of taxpayer money on sponsoring the UFC. They shouldn't even be spending money to "recruit" Marines when there is currently a lockout where they are not recruiting anyone.

Why is it the other services are not sponsoring these events.Marines used to be a silent ,smaller unit that proved themselves time and time again, they gained recognition through their ability to keep going and accomplishing a given mission with class and expertise. For some reason we need to sponsor something to show how tough "Marines" I getting concerned we are becoming more of a side show built upon years of past Marines .If the army "Green Berrets or the "Navy Seals were to get in on this i would not worry so much about it.Just aquestion:Why do we not hear of the "Marine Recons" any more.Sometimes the best advertisement is silence it can provide "Class". Marines had character, you had to want to be a" Marine" even to get through training.

Paul B - Rah! To your comment. That was what I was looking for. I hadn't had a chance to see if they supported the USMC and in what capacity. Now that you brought that to the light, I think it is absolutely ok for us to advertise, just as long as they uphold a model of integrity. There have been scandals in the UFC and the Corps should be very careful with whom they brand with, but all things being equal, and in light of the fact they support wounded warriors, we should use their platform to market.

  • Jay Dubb - 12 years ago

This is the last comment imma make on this but i have to say this, UFC/MMA and so on, worthless sport(s).

@ Paul B, if you paid attention, knuckleheaded Jimmie opened up his trap first! I guess you woulda just sat by and let'm make knuckleheaded comments and not comment back. You gotta be kid'n me with that remark. lol.

  • Paul B - 12 years ago

Had to weigh in here. I think it's great the there are Marines out there in support of the UFC. Anyone who thinks that it's all one way hasn't checked the facts. The UFC has put on many events to benefit wounded veterans. They've put plenty into advertising ( "They fought for us, now it's time that we fought for them") to put awareness out there to benefit our veterans.

The Corps gets a lot of good press from their affiliation with the UFC, which is (like it or not) a very legitimate sports organization that is well on its way to leaving boxing in the dust. While the UFC does use the affiliation to their advantage in their advertising, I think they pay it all back in full through their events that put the spotlight on our veterans and their special circumstances.

James and Jay, I just wanted to point out that neither one of you legitimizes your argument with the name calling and trash talking. You have a point, and I'm not saying either of you is wrong/fake/wannabe/whatever... I am saying that your point is pretty much ignored by anyone not ruled by testosterone over intellect.

Jason, I appreciate your comment, however with continued defense budget cuts looming, recruitment doesn't need time be a priority right now. Additional services and resources to Marines and their families should be a #1 priority. With recent tragedies within the Corps being aired time and time again, it's clear serious attention needs to be placed there...and as I mentioned earlier, resources towards reintegration since all eyes are on the issue because of the increasing rates of unemployment and homelessness. Education needs to be pushed to prepare Marines for post-service.

  • Jason - 12 years ago

I don't see why anyone would protest our support of the UFC. The UFC, and MMA in general, is a legitimate sport that on the professional level has rounds, rules, wight classes, and sponsorship from state gaming commissions similar to boxing and any other martial arts event. Long gone are the days of "human cock-fighting" in which some fights were won literally by punching the other guy in the junk until he quit.

As I read more into this issue, I can see that it's part of a larger, union-based, protest against all sport sponsorship by the armed services. This makes this poll useless.

Someone just needs to tell those who are against spending money on recruiting advertisements that poolees don't grow on trees.

To Jimmie the dipshit- looks like you feel really safe and secured under the blanket of the internet, you internet tuff guy! Lol. And stop perpetr8'n a fraud you fake ass Marine. And there's nut'n to explain. MMA, UFC and so on, bunch of boons feel'n each other up on the floor! You want to watch real fighing, look up Felony fights on youtube. That bullshit you see on tv is a joke. Fake ass Marine! You wish you were one! Lol.

With so many of our Marines needing transitional services to help reintegrate into the civilian sector, I'm sure the money could be better spent on Marines and their families. With the military facing higher unemployment rates and homelessness, that needs to be the priority. Is the UFC active in helping Marines transition besides taking their money to support the UFC brand? The UFC looks better with the Marine Corps behind it. I'm not the certain I could say the same for the reverse. I'd rather see a major martial arts event/competition (which truly embodies Marine Corps principles) be sponsored, but I understand there isn't a platform for marketing on the level like the UFC. (Proud USMC veteran)

To Jay Dubb- you are too stupid to explain the UFC to. Get off my Marine Corps website pansy.

I woulda voted but i didn't like any of the options. I know they can't put all possible options for the choices so they shoulda added "Yes-Other reasons" and "No - Other reasons" to the list of options. I woulda voted "No- Other reasons" simply because there is already too much violence in this world and we don't need another reason to add to this violence. You want to go beat someone's brains in, do it on the battlefield if you have too! Thats what you signed up for!
