Should minors be allowed to get tattoos?

It's a lifelong commitment. There's an age requirement on marriage for the same reason, children are too inexperienced to make such decisions.

Actually I'm not sure if 30 is old enough to get tattoos. I feel really bad for people I see whose bodies are covered with them... imagine what they'll look like when they're 50 or 60 and getting saggy.

It is already too easy for a person under 18 to get a tatoo or body piercing; and I believe that penalties for giving a tatoo or piercing to a minor need to be much harsher. If the law is changed to "under 18 with parental consent", there will be a lot of friends posing as parents to enable teens to get tatoos. To complicate matters further, what about a teen whose parents are divorced? Does the parent with primary custody decide whether or not the child gets a tattoo, or the "fun" parent who sees the child every other weekend and for a couple weeks during the summer?

It's illegal for minors, yet most tramp stamps are given to underage high school girls rather than legal adults. It's enforced like rated R tickets at the movies; hardly at all. How many 30 year old new mothers still enjoy their "I do doggy" advertisement they got when they were 16?

As a 22 year old I would have to say no since it is something permanant more or less (without undergoing painful removal), even with parental consent (too many parents are not too bright anways).

The leap from 13 to 16 is huge and then to 18+. What 13 year olds want vs. 16 and up can change from one day to the next. Ideally 18 but that might be too harsh....perhaps 16 or 17 earliest.

My only caution about this is the body art someone wants when they are a teenager (or even in the early 20's) is not necessarily the body art they will want at 30. Or 90.
