Ubuntu 12.10: Should It Use GNOME 3.4 Or GNOME 3.6

I feel that so many changes are being made which are trying to make Ubuntu work for computers that do not rely on a mouse (touch screen laptops, tablets and phones). I think it is fine to add new features to support new technologies but taking away so many user desktop features is not a good idea.

I am very graphical in nature and am very efficient with the use of my mouse and feel that the user should always have a choice (ie: use my mouse or use the new keyboard/touchscreen options to find apps and windows).

My main point is, that there are many good features that are liked by users and should be available if users want to use them. I think it is fine to add new features or make some features turned off by default but by just chopping/deleting so many features without studying user work flows seems totally wrong (as well as the effects of these changes on various gnome desktops). I do think that Nautilus is a little slow sometimes so I am sure some things need to be cleaned up and improved but just using the chopping block and removing so many features liked by the users isn't the best way to go.

I guess I am starting to think that many developers in the Ubuntu community are trying to be bold and new without really studying the effects of these changes on the users. I think that desktop computing is being pushed under the rug in an attempt to make an operating system easy to use on touchscreens.

I am a programmer and am starting to think that I may have to go to another distribution to keep the control of my desktop in my hands and not in the hands of people making bad choices for the desktop/laptop community as a whole.

I want two-panels feature and change-wallpaper feature back but with some improvements that will fix that mess in the left panel.

All these changes are scaring me, why Gnome is going "forward" deleting the interesting features, first the gnome panel, now nautilus (and others, of course). Why I'm would like to lost control over my desktop?, I can't understand this process. In fact, I'm using at my work two PCs, one of them is a Solaris 11 JDS (Gnome 2.30 based with Compiz) desktop with all under control, in the Linux side I have returned to my old desktop manager, Ubuntu 12.04 x64 with Xfce, Compiz and Cairo dock.

Anyway, I'm a heavy file manager user, Nautilus (with all the features, including the tree panel and the extra pane) is a really good place to do the easy things. Nautilus is, from my point of view, the best file manager of the "included" file managers like Thunar or Konkeror. But, why Gnome do not have an advanced file manager like Krusader (KDE)? I don't want to use a QT software if I have a good GTK app. Double Commander is good try, I'm using it, but it's a beta, Gnome Commander, SunFlower, etc, do not have all the features. The best of them is Krusader, but I don't like KDE.

So, if Nautilus, as is, is going to die, I prefer for Ubuntu to switch to other file manager, perhaps an advanced one, or, in the other hand, something easy to use like Thunar, it don't have all the features but it's faster than Nautilus, I means, if Nautilus is not Nautilus I prefer a faster filemanager.
