Rodren is right that's why they charge $55 for a perm or $35 for a press and curl so they can get that extra $5. Ladies, for real yall gonna let these people put chemicals in your hair and twist up your edges without tipping??? Yall bold!

Mannnnnnnnnnnnnn. You better tip your barber, unless you want a John Legend hairline.

My barber Tim is the most unassuming, regular looking and speaking white guy ever. But don't you know when his phone rings Eazy-E spitting Dope Man is the tone. That combined with him once regaling me with a tale of how his woman once tried to poison him by cooking chicken breast in dish soap proved a couple of things to me, never eat at Tim's house, and this unassuming white guy is more hood than I will ever be. As far as tipping goes, my beard and cut cost 20, I always, always leave that chair feeling like a million bucks so I tip a fin every time. Tim is always grateful, always hooks my cut up, and is just a cool cat who i don't mind showing a little gratitude toward in the form of a couple of dollars.

I get strong armed at the barbershop. That joker don't even try to give you change unless you ask for it. Then look at you funny when you do. Shouldn't I be the one that determines the tip amount?

I had a female barber that I loved. every 2 weeks i would see her. She took her time, trimmed me right, and had my head looking clean. i would always tip her 15 bucks. she deserved it. the work was quality, she was professional and with that tip practices with her i had a VIP status. I was always next every time I walked into the store. we dated and broke up, fucking up all chances to get a trim and some trim from her. But the next great barber i find will get the same treatment. a 15 dollar tip

When I was young, my mom would always give me some cash to tip the stylist who cut my hair so I just grew up thinking that's what you're supposed to do. I also tip other "beauticians" such as nail people and massage therapists, 15-20%.

I go to Supercuts, but I still tip about 15 - 20%. When I was getting my hair done regularly, I don't think I did, but I was also in my early 20s and didn't really know you were supposed to. I think it's an education thing. I tip everyone, the nail lady, my brow waxer, the people at the car wash, the valet, even the hotel housekeeper. I didn't always though, it's something I learned over time. However, for the most part since I bought my house I do my own hair/nails and wash my own car, etc because that stuff doesn't fit into my regular budget. It surprises me how many people don't know to tip outside of restaurants and how many people still think 10% is a good tip. I learned by going out with coworkers and my cheese loving friends, thank white Jesus for them.

:) I totally forgot to make my point with my earlier ramble..my white friends do tip their overpriced stylists...most of the time it's at least a $20.00

My hair stylist works out of her home so she doesn't charge as much as actual salons (she charges $60.00 as opposed to $100.00 - $180.00) (this is for weaves or braids) so I always give her $10.00 tip at least.
I'm glad I don't have to go to the white hair salons because up here in Toronto some of the stylists have to pay out to the salon. So my friends have paid $200 and up for a wash, cut and colour... Don't get me started on their hair extensions either....some start at $300.00 and go ip from there...dead serious.

Rod, IF you consider a tip "just a couple of dollars?" You're likely RIGHT; people are tipping.

However, a lot of folks consider tips to be a bigger amount and percentage of the services rendered. I overtip (like you two), so if I was MAD? I'd leave a 2.50 tip for a 12.50 cut, lol. But, okay; whatever. For me? I hate tipping so much, I overdo it ("Black Tax") and keep it moving, as I don't want to talk about or haggle or calculate for too long. For those I see regularly, I've decided on a flat tip that never changes (again, too much, but when I need, e.g., a broken nail fixed ASAP, she makes it HAPPEN).

But, Karen MAY be speaking of expensive hair services and the notion of, say, 15-25% tipping on THOSE services. When women are paying hundreds or more for hairstyles? Customers DO get a little tight when they think about tipping on top of THAT. At that level? I do believe folks believe that the tip is "built into" the price. I know that's not accurate; it may be right, though.

But, here's a dilemma I've had at times: folks who try to appear more professional, like they're doctors and when we come to the end of the service, I get confused about whether I've received a medical service or a "vanity service." I don't tip doctors, so, I'm going to need you to come out of that white coat, those scrubs, and back a bit up off the medical lingo IF you want me to understand who you are to me, lol!

Now, alla this said? I found Rod's shock and alarm at what folks AREN'T doing around tipping hysterical. Isn't Rod the one who's always telling us that people ain't ISH??! :o)
