I think the whole handshaking thing should go out of style. It's gross and germy. There's no reason hand-to-hand contact should be necessary to show friendliness, and countless studies have shown that the hands carry viruses, bacteria and other nasties. No thanks, especially if you're a stranger who has shaken many other hands in sequence without washing your own, please don't extend your hand to mine. I don't want to appear rude and feel embarrassed by refusing your handshake.

I used to work preparing people for job interviews which, of course, included The Handshake. I came to feel that it is a stupid custom. I believe I read somewhere that it originated as a way of showing that one does not have a weapon. My objection to it is not so much germs in general as the yucky feeling of "where have those hands been?". As in - nose-picking, butt scratching, snot-wiping, (guys) adjustment of personal parts.....you get the picture. I am not germ-phobic, I just get grossed out by these thoughts and I would be just fine with not shaking hands with strangers.

Youre being rude! Since when did a handshake become COOTIES!? Shake, do the business, then if you must wash/sanitize your poor infected hand.

Ooooh! Comments... maybe every article should have a poll now, I've missed reading the comments more than the articles lately :(

Not because of germs. I've been squished too many times by sadists with a death wish.

I am sure there is a study out there that says a handshake will make the customer trust the employee more or something. Unless you have a compromised immune system, there is really no reason to avoid a handshake. Of course, if you avoid a handshake like that then you probably do have a compromised immune system since it hasn't built up resistances like it should. Of course if the person is sniffling/sneezing and such, then all bets are off even though it might just be seasonal allergies (especially this time of year).

Dude, don't be a wuss. You're not going to die. And if you do get, OH NO, germs, guess what it will just improve your immune system. This is how your body works. If you live in a bubble constantly washing hands or using hand sanitizer then you're really just making your immune system weaker. Grow up!
