Who Should Be Responsible For Strengthening Oversight on Parent Plus Loans?

Well, I commented on the first article, and I'll leave a comment here as well. I choose all of the above. Schools need to be more transparent with the total cost to expect for a year of college. Secondly, the lending institution, whether it be a bank or the government, need to properly screen those who are borrowing and accurately rate their ability to repay the loan. However, the greatest and final responsibility lies with those borrowing the money. Ignorance is not acceptable. My parents were not financial geniuses, however they met with guidance counselors, went to financial aid meetings and presentations, and requested more information from institutions than I ever thought was available.

We live in a text message world, people have a hard time focusing more than 140 characters at a time. However, when addressing matters such as school funding, full and thorough research is needed. I see it when I go to my kids meet the teacher nights now that they are into the middle school and above. A class of 20-30 kids, and 6-8 parents show up. And of those that do you can tell they are listening to the teacher for only the first minute or two, then their eyes glaze over and they pull out their phones.

Your kids are the single biggest contribution you will make to this world, for better or worse, the rewards to be reaped are directly connected to the effort you put in.
