I often use the old tool for rougher jobs or just keep it incase the new one craps out on me. I tell myself Ill go through all my tools and give any of the doubles away but i still have 6 drills and 7 power saws. Plus I am going through a vintage stage and I keep collecting more tools from the past. I am sure I am not the only one out there like this.

Way too often I have just saved the old tools 'just in case...' That has created another problem of creating a bigger garage and shop for storage. I now have more garage and shop space than the square footage of my house! I do have some very good (sometimes odd) old tools - but always looking for better tools. After enough years I am now trying to thin out and moving on good used tools to people that can use them.

Although I said I sell it, it really depends on why I'm replacing it. If it's shot, I'll throw it out. But if I'm just upgrading and it still works okay, then I'll sell it or give it to one of my kids if they want it. And many times it's not replacing anything, it's a new tool ---WHOOPPPEEEE!!!!!
